How long is a basketball game?

A basketball game (NBA) is technically only 48 minutes. However, with half-time, timeouts, fouls, and close games, a basketball game is actually around 2 1/2 hours.

The game is divided into 4 quarters, each 12 minutes long. Should the score be tied at the end of the fourth quarter, the game will go into a 5 minute overtime period. Should the game be tied at the end of overtime, there will be a 5 minute second overtime, and so on.

College basketball games are 40 minutes, with no quarters but instead two 20 minute halves. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, the game will proceed into a five minute bonus period called overtime, similar to the NBA.

How much do college teams receive in 'prize money' for attending and or winning in the NCAA tournament?

The NCAA tournament distributes money to conferences based upon how many games the member teams play in the tournament. Then the conference divides that money equally among the member teams. For participation in the tournament the NCAA gives teams a travel allowance for each game that they play, but the real money comes from their share of the conference money. For example the MVC received $2.95 million based upon its success between 2000-2005, whereas the Big 12 received $14.4 million. Teams that make it to the first round this year and lose receive $82,000 in travel money, and they receive more if they advance.

Which basketball coach has the most NCAA career wins?

  • The coach with the most wins overall is women's basketball coach Pat Summitt with 913. All of these are with the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.
  • Bobby Knight of Texas Tech (& primarily, Indiana University) has the most wins in men's basketball with 902 career wins. He is now retired, and his son took over for him as Texas Tech's coach

If the question refers to any NCAA division:

  • Gene Bess of Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, three hours south of St. Louis, became the first college basketball coach to win 1,000 games on Feb. 22, 2006. The 70-year-old Bess' 1,000-258 record is unmatched at any collegiate level.
  • Harry Statham at McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill., near St. Louis, is the winningest coach at any four-year college or university, compiling 912 wins in 40 years of coaching.
Two Different Versions of Winningest

MOST CAREER WINS:

Bob Knight(Ohio State,1962)

Army 1963-1969, Indiana 1970-2000, Texas Tech 2002-Present

902 Won 354 Lost .713 percent WINNINGEST BY PERCENTAGE:

Adolph Rupp (Kansas,1923)

Kentucky 1931-52, 1954-1972

John Wooden(Purdue,1932)

Indiana State 1947-1948, UCLA 1949-1975

664 Won 162 Lost .804 percent

The key to the question is NCAA wins. Summitt has over 1000 career wins, but 175 of those wins came under the aegis of the AIWA (pre-NCAA). Pat has approx. 850 NCAA wins and hasn't caught Bob Knight yet.

Why are the rankings of basketball teams in the NCAA tournament called seeds?

One of the meaning of the word seed, when it comes to sports, is 'a ranking of teams or players for a specific purpose'. So, as far as sports are concerned, the words seed and rank are synonymous.

The use of "seed" or "seeding" was common in tennis in the late 1800s. It was used to describe the act of spreading or "seeding" the best players throughout the tournament in order to keep the best players from meeting/playing early on. The "seeded" players were those of higher skill and thus the term became synonymous with ranking.

The term is also used in terms of "seeding" a deck of cards; spreading the most desirable cards throughout a deck so as to not have them all appear at once.

What type of basketball is used in NCAA?

There a many different balls used. Generally speaking each conference has it's official ball. The official ball for the tournament is the Wilson Solution. This ball is commonly used by other schools as well. Some schools use the Nike Elite Championship ball and I believe I've seen teams use the Spaulding TF1000 (a very common ball at the high school level).

What is the average final score for the final Division 1 NCAA mens basketball game?

I am assuming that what you are really looking for is the magic answer to type into the "tie-breaker" box of your bracket. Usually a tournament bracket asks players to predict the final score of the championship game as a tie breaker.

By taking the final scores since 1939 and adding the two scores together (winner plus loser) and then performing statistical analysis on that data, we get a simple mean score of 136.67, and within a 99% confidence interval, the mean is between 128 and 145.

That means that any number between 128 and 145 (both scores added together) is a good answer to the box. After that it's mostly luck. Good luck!

The three-point line was added in the 1986-1987 season, so if we eliminate the scores from before 1986, then the average shifts to between 145 and 155 with a confidence interval of 90%.
