What happens if you get poked by a bluegill's spines?

If you get poked by a bluegill's spines, you may experience pain, swelling, and localized redness at the site of the injury. The spines can inject mucus that may cause irritation or an allergic reaction in some individuals. It's important to clean the wound thoroughly and apply antiseptic to prevent infection. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical attention is advisable.

How can you tell a female bluegill from a male?

I can find no literature mentioning any kind of sexual dimorphism in the Brown Bullhead Catfish (Ameiurus nebulosus) so I would assume that the most probable difference would only be visible during breeding when the ovipositors of the fish would be visible. Then it would be easy to distinguish male from female because only the female will produce ova (eggs).
