Ten teams get to play in the BCS each year. Two play for the National Championship, while the other eight will play in the Sugar, Orange, Fiesta and Rose Bowls.

Any of the 120 FBS teams are "eligible," but only the winners of the six BCS conferences get an automatic berth. (These are the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East and the Pac-10.) Only one team from a non-BCS conference can get an automatic berth, and they must be ranked in the top-12, or in the top-16 if they are higher than another BCS conference champion. The only exception is Notre Dame, who gets an automatic berth as long as they are ranked in the top-8.

Within 100 miles of Memphis, Tennessee, several colleges and universities can be found, including the University of Memphis, Rhodes College, and Southwest Tennessee Community College. Other notable institutions include Christian Brothers University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The LSU Tigers (Louisiana State University) were the #1 ranked team in the BCS and in most other polls for the majority of the 2011 football season. LSU was ranked 4th in the AP and Coaches pre-season polls.

LSU finished the season 12-0 for the first time in team history, and defeated Georgia 42-10 to win the SEC Championship on December 3, 2011. They were scheduled to played in the BCS national championship game on January 9, 2012, in a rematch against Alabama, who they beat in overtime 9-6 during the regular season.

MAC teams do not receive automatic bids unless they are ranked in the top 15 of the BCS standings.

The Rose Bowl is the oldest college bowl game, starting in 1902, and there are three bowl games that started play in 1935 and are tied for second oldest (Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Sun Bowl). Next comes the Cotton Bowl whose first game was in 1937.

The NCAA Record Book officially recognizes five national championships for Auburn University (1913, 1957, 1983, 1993, 2010). Auburn University officially only claims the 1957 and 2010 national titles, but also recognizes the 1913, 1983, 1993, and 2004 seasons as "national championships" in their media guide.
