I have noticed that my box turtle will sometimes sleep with her head hanging out of her shell. She only completely retreats into her carapece when she is burrowed into the substrate or when she is in her hollowed-log hut. She typically sleeps when the sun goes down (or lights-out), but will quickly spring back to attention when there is activity in the room. She rises early (with the sun).

Will two male box turtles mount each other?

First answer: No.

Second answer: Not exactly, but rabbits of both sexes sometimes mount each other in a show of dominance. Mounting is not always sexual behaviour. If the dominance behaviour turns aggressive, separate the rabbits immediately. Don't let rabbits fight. You can only keep rabbits together if they're bonded. Are box turtles extinct or endangered?

The Three-toed Box Turtle is not listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature, (IUCN) Red List or the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Endangered Species List. They seem to be popular pets, even though their needs are rather specific to size, and conditions of their enclosures to be happy, and healthy in captivity. It appears that a few individual states may have some protection for this species, focused on preventing the removal, and sale of "wild caught species" from the state. I couldn't find any clear regulations, or guidelines from an approved agency or organization. For more details, please see sites listed below.

Can fish go in an aquarium that had a box turtle in it?

Answer: Yes. The turtle, however, must have land to climb up on so as not to tire out, fresh fruits, vegetables, worms and crickets to eat on that land, and it must be handled so as not to make it antisocial.(Note: the turtle needs enough of a platform to get totally out of the water and crawl around. Not enough land may result in stress for your turtle.)

How many eggs will a box turtle lay?

They can mate once and lay fertile eggs up to four years from that one mating. This helps to compensate for their inability to attract a mate. Females can lay up to three clutches of from two to ten eggs, depending on the species. Eastern box turtles will typically lay one clutch of of 2 to 6 eggs (younger females will lay fewer, older females more). The eggs typically incubate for 75 to 85 days at 75% to 85% humidity. Box turtles exhibit TSD (Temperature-dependent Sexual Determination). Eggs incubated at 71 ° F (22 ° C) produce males. Eggs incubated at 79 ° F (26 ° C) produce a mixed ratio of males and females and eggs incubated at 88 ° F (31 ° C) produce females.

What type of water does box turtles drink?

the type of water that you need would depend on the type of turtle that you have. If you got your turtle from a pet shop they should be able to tell you, but if you got it from a lake or the ocean then you would need to make the water as similar as possible.

Either way your water would need to be teated. You could probable just phone a pet shop and tell them that you have got a turtle from a friend and are unsure what water you need to put it in - they should be able to help.

You more than likely will need to get a water test kit (the same as what you would get for fish) and also some water purifying tablets or liquids.

You need to remiember also that turtles need to be able to get onto land as they can not breath underwater. the best way to do this is to put wand and rocks in one side of the tank that you have them in.

What adaptation does a box turtle's shell have?

Depends how its "broken." If it really is cracked or broken the turtle most likely will die or will be paralyzed. If the portion broken is only on the side and doesn't get to close to the center then most likely it will survive. It all depends on if the broken part touches the spinal cord/or reveals internal organs.
