A penny could buy you a great many things in the year 1928. A penny could buy a child a piece of candy for example.

The inscription on the obverse of the 1953 British Crown (Five Shillings)(Coronation) reads -

If you just want to collect, grab anything that takes your fancy.

If you want to collect as an investment, go for "Uncirculated" or "Proof" coins, which start out expensive and usually increase in value over time.

Two Pound coins would be good to start with, since they were first issued in 1986 as a commemorative coin, and became a regular issue from 1997. They are an attractive, varied and unusual coin.

British decimal Two Pound coins have not been around long to become rare or valuable.

One Shilling GBP in 1930 had the purchasing power of about £2.10 GBP today.

If you refer to British coins, yes, there were lots of them minted in 22 carat gold in 1991.

There were the usual Sovereign and Half-Sovereign coins, and Five Pound and Two Pound coins minted.

Up market there were 100 Pound, 50 Pound, 25 Pound and 10 Pound coins, some minted from fine gold and some alloyed with silver.

The Ten Shilling note was the smallest denomination bank note of the British and most British Commonwealth countries pre-decimal currencies.

The Ten Shilling note was equal to half a Pound, a Half-Sovereign, 2 Crowns or 120 pence.

The first British Ten Shilling note was issued in 1914. Eight issues of the Ten Shilling note were made from 1914 to 1961.

The Ten Shilling note was progressively withdrawn after the introduction of decimal currency in 1971. It was replaced by the 50 New Pence coin.

The term "New Pence" was used on British Coins from 1968 to 1981 to make the distinction between the new and old currencies.

In 1970, Britain had not yet fully converted to decimal currency, full conversion was to take place in 1971.

The only "New Pence" coins circulating in 1970 were the 5, 10 and 50 New Pence coins.

These denominations were changed during the 1990's to a smaller coin and the older larger coins were withdrawn from circulation and demonetised.
