Fruits and Vegetables

Defined as the developed ovary of a seed plant with its contents and accessory parts, fruits are a wide variety of deliciously edible foods that include berries, grapes, watermelon and tomato, among many others. A vegetable is any edible stem, root, or leaf of a plant. While most vegetables are cooked in order to be edible, there are some that can be eaten raw. There are also fruits which are considered vegetables. In botanical terms, all vegetables that have seed are called fruits, and there is no distinction for vegetables. Vegetable is the culinary term for fruits that are not sweet, but instead savory.

Is a peanut a vegetable or a fruit?

User Avatar
In botanical terms it is considered a legume, which is a fruit. In culinary terms it is considered to be a plant cultivated for an edible part, therefore a vegetable. Botanically speaking, it is a fruit, since the seeds are contained within a pod, even though that pod develops underground. Peanuts are somewhat unique within the legume family due to their geocarpy (fruit develops underground). a peanut is a vegetable cause of the way it grows and what not, but to everyone who's saying its just a nut or its a fruit your wrong! fruit

Asked in Care of Rabbits, Fruits and Vegetables

Can rabbits eat brussels sprouts?

User Avatar
Yes, brussels sprouts are quite nutritious for rabbits in moderation (also hamsters, guinea pigs, humans, etc.). The dark-coloured outside leaves are especially healthy. The inner white/light leaves are low in nutritonal value, might make your rabbit sick. Like all cruciferous vegetables, brussels sprouts can cause gas. Gas can lead to serious illness in rabbits, so brussels sprouts shouldn't be a staple in your rabbit's diet. Some bunnies are more sensitive to gas than others; very sensitive bunnies shouldn't have brussel sprouts at all. It's important to pay attention to your individual rabbits so that you know how they react to certain foods! Feed rabbits vegetables often if you want a healthy rabbit! Not cold, but room temperature vegetables. A healthy rabbit diet includes a daily "salad" of mixed leafy dark greens. Brussel sprout leaves can be included in the rabbit's salad. Other vegetables (like carrot, squash) should be considered treats (same as fruit) and strictly limited. See the related question below for more info about the rabbit diet.

How can I use turnip greens?

User Avatar
Below are a few suggestions for using turnip greens: Juice them with carrots. Drink the juice. Wash and cut the greens. Put them in enough water to cover and boil until tender, replacing the water as it evaporates. Salt to taste. Season with olive oil. You can add a couple teaspoons of vinegar too; this will cut the bitterness a bit. Greens are also good cooked with bacon and onions. Turnip greens are delicious served with cornbread.

How do you remove wax coating from fruit?

User Avatar
Wash with warm water and dish soap. Then rinse. Except that doesn't work,at least on apples. You can scrub with soapy water and then scrape a knife across the skin and remove vaste amounts of wax still. Something like steel wool MIGHT work or an abrasive cleaning pad such as a "greenie" perhaps. The wax on an apple IS NOT water soluable.
