Bronx NYC

The Bronx is the northernmost borough in New York City. It is 42 square miles. The area took a decline in the 1920s and 30s due to gang activity during prohibition. The area continued to decline through the 1980s, and was considered one of the most neglected areas of the United States. Revitalization began in the late 1990s, and the area is now growing again.

Who is the Bronx named after?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It got its name from a Swedish farmer who lived there, named Jonas Bronck. As the Bronx at that time was nearly completely uninhabited except for Jonas Bronck and his family and his livestock, visitors who went there would say, "We're going to the Bronck's farm" like you would say, "We're going to the Mulligan's house." Later the name was shortened to the Bronx instead of the Bronck's.

User Avatar

No. The Bronx is the only New York City borough that is not an island, or part of an island. The borough of Manhattan and the borough of Staten Island are both islands, and the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are located on the western end of Long Island. The Bronx is the only New York City borough that is attached to the mainland of New York State.

Is Harlem in The Bronx?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, the Harlem River does not flow through Harlem. It flows around it.

The island of Manhattan is surrounded by three rivers: the Hudson River, the Harlem River, and the East River. The East River is not actually a river, but an estuary, or a tidal strait. It connects to the ocean on both sides. It flows south from the Long Island Sound, down the east side of Manhattan and the west side of Queens and Brooklyn, and into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Hudson River flows down the west side of Manhattan, and the east side of New Jersey. (Interesting bit of trivia: the Hudson River is actually a fjord. It is the only fjord in North America).

The Harlem River branches off of the Hudson River, and flows down over the top of Manhattan, into the East River.

See the Related Link below for a complete NYC subway map. The Hudson, Harlem, and East Rivers are all labeled.

How much is the ticket for the Bronx Zoo?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The cost of a ticket is different depending on the age of the visitor, and what type of ticket is purchased. For children under 2 years of age the zoo is free, and those less than 12 years old are considered children, therefore the ticket cost is less. The "total experience ticket" includes all seven rides and attractions, and the general admission ticket is admission to the zoo only. Wednesdays are a"pay-what-you-wish' donation day. They do recommend that adults donate at least $15.00, children at least donate $11.00 while seniors at least donate $13.00. The following is a quick reference of what a ticket cost.

  • For one adult ticket "total experience" is $27.00--for one general admission ticket it's $16.00
  • For one child ticket "total experience" is $21.00--for one general admission ticket it's $12.00
  • For one Senior ticket (65+yr) "total experience" is $23.00--for one general admission ticket $14.00

In what county is the Bronx New York?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Westchester is directly north of The Bronx. If you continue heading north in The Bronx, you will end up in Westchester.

The Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island). Westchester County is part of New York State, but NOT part of New York City.

Westchester is upstate of New York City, but it is still very close to the southern tip of New York State. Nobody besides New York City residents would ever call Westchester "upstate."

When did the Bronx become part of NYC?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

From 1670, the land of the neighborhood was the estate of the Morris family in Westchester County. The area was sparsely populated until 1840, when Gouverneur Morris Jr., son of the famous congressional delegate and grandson of Lewis, allowed a railroad to be built across the property. In 1848, he sold the land next to the line for the development of a new town called Morrisania Village. In 1855, additional settlements along the rail line became the town of Morrisania, with its political center in the original 1840 village. At first the village was an early forerunner of today's bedroom communities, populated by people who worked in Manhattan, but it quickly developed their own local industries and craftsmen as it developed into a full-fledged town (Jackson, 1995). In 1874, the area was annexed to New York City (then consisting only of Manhattan) as part of the Twenty-Third Ward. In 1887, the Third Avenue Elevated was extended to area and provided easy and quick access to and from Manhattan. By the time the New York City Subway was extended to the area in 1904, a large influx of European immigrants had given the neighborhood an urban character, with tenements replacing houses as the dominant form of dwelling (Jackson, 1995). In the 1950s along with changing demographics, Robert Moses destroyed various tenements in favor of a colony of public housing. After the construction of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, the poverty that East Tremont suffered spread into Morrisania. As a result, the Third Avenue El closed in 1973. During this time period a wave of arson destroyed or damaged many of the residential, commercial, and industrial structures in the area. * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morrisania,_Bronx

How do you get from Manhattan to the Bronx?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on your starting and ending points. Your best bet is to take a bus to a subway line in the Bronx, and then transfer to either the E,F,R,or V for places near Queens Boulevard and Hillside Avenue, or the 7 line for places along Roosevelt Avenue and Queens Boulevard, or the J/Z lines for places near Jamaica Avenue, or the M line for places near Ridgewood and Middle Village. The Q44 goes from the Bronx Zoo to Jamaica traveling via Main Street, and the QBx1 goes from CoOp City to Flushing. You can transfer to the M60, which goes to LaGuardia Airport via Astoria Boulevard at any subway station along 125th Street. Once in Queens, you can transfer to you Queens bus line or walk if it is close to the major subway routes mentioned above. For more info, go to: www.mta .info, and click on trip planner, and type in the exact address. Then, visit the schedules and maps and plan your trips based on that. The website also offers Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, as well as the subway.

How many departments in the Bronx zoo?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The zoo has 4,000 animals representing 600 species, there has been some rumors of closing exhibits due to the slow economy, but the zoo has recently received the new Spotted Hyenas for the African Plains, and the Aardvarks have gone into the Carter Giraffe House. The zoo covers over 265 acres with parks, exhibits, and naturalistic habitats, all with the Bronx River flowing through it. For more details, please see sites listed below.
[It has about 4000 animals represent 600 different species in display.]

According to the 2010 Annual Report, the Animal Census shows 6,919 animals in the Bronx Zoo. If the Census is widened to include all five of the parks under the supervision of the Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx, Central Park, Queens and Prospect Park Zoos and the NY Aquarium), there are 12,226 animals species.

These figures include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. They do not include invertebrates, which are notoriously hard to count. They are estimated as 177,982, of which approximately 58,000 are Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and several thousand Leaf Cutter Ants. (12/2011)
