According to an interview on "The Chris Isaak Hour" (season 1 episode 7) it was a nickname given to him by a girlfriend who told him he had "eyes like a cat". Additionally with the popularity of contemporary movies "Cat Balllou" "What's new Pussycat" and because one of his favorite songs at the time was "Walking my cat named dog" by Norma Tanega, he decided to adopt "Cat" as a performing name.
