Why did the Charlottetown Accord fail?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Charlottetown Accord failed due to the amount of clauses it had in it, each of those designed to benefit a certain group. With all these clauses it was very easy to find faults in it. also 54.5 Canadian voters rejected the Accord. It was rejected the most in B.C, where 68.3 percent voted no. A lot of people in B.C felt that Quebec was being given too much power in the accord. On the other hand, Quebec believed that it wasn't receiving enough power (even though they were going to be given 25 seats in the House of Commons regardless their size of population!) They were also fearing the Aboriginal self-government that would have been granted in this accord, because it would affect a large population of northern Quebec.

There are two ways to reach Prince Edward Island: via either the CARIBOU-WOOD ISLAND FERRY or the CONFEDERATION BRIDGE.

By taking the Ferry, it is a shorter distance (225 km), but it may actually take longer if there are long lines for a ferry. In any case, this is the route:

  1. Take (TRANS-CANADA) HIGHWAY 104 - WEST (towards ANTIGONISH), across the CANSO CAUSEWAY to Georges Island, where you will continue on the highway to (TRANS-CANADA) HIGHWAY 106 - NORTH to the PEI FERRY off EXIT 22.
  2. Take (TRANS-CANADA) HIGHWAY 106 to the FERRY to WOOD ISLANDS, PEI. The ferry is operated by NFL (Northumberland Ferries Ltd.) For more information, see the related link below.
  3. Once you are on PEI, continue on (TRANS-CANADA) ROUTE 1 - WEST to Charlottetown.

Or, you can take the CONFEDERATION BRIDGE, it is 400 km taking this route:

  1. Take (TRANS-CANADA) HIGHWAY 104 - WEST (towards ANTIGONISH), across the CANSO CAUSEWAY to Georges Island, where you will continue on the highway to NEW BRUNSWICK, where the TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY continues as ROUTE 2.
  2. Continue on (TRANS-CANADA) ROUTE 2 - WEST to (TRANS-CANADA) ROUTE 16 to P.E.I. off EXIT 518B.
  3. Take (TRANS-CANADA) ROUTE 16 to the CONFEDERATION BRIDGE (toll), which you will use to cross into P.E.I.
  4. Once you are on P.E.I., continue on (TRANS-CANADA) ROUTE 1 - EAST to Charlottetown.
