An Andean Condor is the world's largest bird of prey. It has huge wings, but it's size means it prefers to take off by leaping from a height and gliding on updrafts.

Condors are soaring birds. They do not hunt, and their over the ground speed is typically dependent on the local winds. Condors do not have well-developed flight muscles, and flap their wings only to take off and land, or on rare occasions when unable to find updrafts to ride.

Whether soaring or flapping, their speed tends to be around 14 - 15 meters/sec (31 - 33 mph). They are capable of streamlining their wings and attaining a somewhat higher speed under ideal conditions to cover more ground when enough altitude is available.

Because there were only 22 of the birds left in 1981. There were no wild birds left, all were in captivity. Breeding was slow but the bird came to total 223 by August 2003. There were 138 birds held in captivity and the rest were released in the wild to try and reproduce. The birds need to be 6 years old before they can successfully breed. By January 2006 there was 127 birds in the wild. This species is still in critical condition, but their numbers are very slowly raising.
