Crabs don't urinate in the typical sense. Waste from nitrogen metabolism is not concentrated into a urinary bladder like mammals; aquatic crustaceans are able to dissolve wastes directly into the water through their gills. This is important since nitrogenous waste mostly takes the form of ammonia (not urea) which is highly toxic. Studies indicate that energy expenditures for physical processes at the gills focus on uptake of oxygen, which is sparsely dissolved in water, not the elimination of wastes like ammonia, ammonium, or carbon dioxide. Because of the relative ease of elimination of the highly soluble ammonia and the more urgent need for oxygen uptake at the gills, the nitrogenous waste excretion process can be fairly described as 'passive'.
Why does the hermit crab move in and out different shells during its lifetime?
Because it outgrows the shell it is currently in and much ditch it and move on to another shell which it will eventually outgrow again. Much like how you do not wear what you wore when you were a child!
Do you have to kill a hermit crab if it bites you and does not let go?
No you do not. You should put warm water on your hand, and hermit crab. Most of the time it will let go.
Don't kill it!!! I have two hermit crabs, and my friend picked one up, not knowing that it could pinch so hard. So it pinched her, and my Junior in HS friend screamed and cried for a good half hour before we could get it off. I googled how to get it off, and any solutions we tried DID NOT WORK!! (including the above one) so we hit it, someone offered to smash it, and we were about to cut into her skin to get it off, until I thought of the obvious solution. WARNING: It may seem inhumane, but the hermit crab was fine, and desperate situations call for desparate measures.
We filled up the sink and held her hand (with the hermit crab on it) under water until the hermit crab had no choice but to let go so it could breath. It's not necessarily the fastest (or nicest) solution, but it worked and we got the hermit crab out as soon as she pulled her hand out so it could catch it's breath. Most of the skin on her palm scabbed over after it died, and she still has a scar, so hermit crab pinches are not something to laugh about (at the moment :) ). They are super painful, so if all else fails, just dunk im.
When does warm imitation crab meat spoil?
A week in the fridge. In freezer? Depends. If you put it in right away it will be fine for a month. Since it's sea food I wouldn't keep it in any longer than that. They also have a sell by date. If it's over the sell by date in the fridge throw it out.
lots of things. especially cold and lack of suitable water. they can easily freeze to death and water that hasn't been declorinated will kill them as well. if your hermit crab buries itself or you don't see it for a while don't dig it up. this will kill it. and if you see limbs in the cage don't worry or remove them. your crab is probably just molting
How do you tell the difference between male and female blue crabs?
Male crabs have a triangular shape at the underside of the body while the female has no triangular shape but a round circle on the underside if its body. Males also tend to have larger claws than females.
Crabs live from the bottom of the oceanic trenches to the top of the inter-tidal zone, to some cases of land Crabs such as on Christmas island. The highest concentration of crabs corresponds to the highest concentration of available food which is at the mid-tidal zone.
Crabs have an exoskeleton which means their skeletons are on the outside of their bodies.
In order to grow larger, a crab must "molt" or shed its shell when the shell becomes too small to contain its body. The new crab shell is already surrounding the crab's body, but it is soft and needs time to harden into the protective covering we all recognize.
The dungeness crab is a fairly large species of crab. They are predators and eat other crabs, mussels, clams, small fish, and other crustaceans.
What is the mating behavior of a hermit crab?
Well it all depends on if you have a male hermit crab. And a female hermit crab. They will have the eggs in water. If you live by a ocean u need salt water. If you don't live by a ocean you need fresh water. Its not that easy because you will need to have a Little bit bigger water bowl so they can have the eggs in there. Well if you see your eggs... They Carrie them under there legs. Kinda like a kangaroo ...Well good luck If you have eggs
What are some problems inherent in molting?
Growth occurs by molting, or ecdysis. In many arachnids the first molt occurs while the animal is still within the egg. ... Growth can occur only by shedding the old exoskeleton, a process termed molting or ecdysis.
How long can crab live without food?
Depending on its size, a crab can go up to two weeks without food. Crabs eat very little and it store water in the back of its shell to moisture its gills.
Who discovered the Japanese spider crab?
The largest one in captivity is 12 feet and 40 years old. There is nothing on the biggest one ever.
Are spider crabs dangerous to man?
Not really. They can pinch you, yes, and if they're big in size - they can cause some pain, but no severe wounds or death. There are some very, very large species, but you'd rarely meet one on your everyday beach, and they're usually living more than 10 feet underwater.
Ive cooked mud crab before, its nothing like mud though!
it takes about 10-20 mins
Is it normal for a hermit crab claw to fall off?
There are several reasons a hermit crab might lose its claw.
Keep in mind, only a stressed hermit crab will drop a limb.
If your hermit crab has dropped a claw or another limb, you need to look at what may have stressed him enough to lose a leg or claw.
Was he recently purchased and is new to your home? If a hermit crab is not given time to de-stress after you bring him home, he may start dropping limbs. Once you have him in his crabitat he should be left alone and not handled for at least two weeks so he can get used to the vibrations in your home and his new surroundings.
Is the temperature in the crabitat in normal ranges for hermit crabs, ideally a range at one end near 73*F and the other end near 80*F? They need different temperature ranges so they can moderate their body temperature, being cold blooded animals.
Is the humidity at an acceptable level in the tank? Ideally it should be between 70 and 80% relative humidity.
Has the crab undergone a lot of handling or harrassment lately?
Had the crab been involved in a "shell fight" with another crab? Often a crab would rather die than give up his shell, and might lose a limb in a fight to keep his shell. In this case, always make sure there are at minimum three shells per crab near their size and with the shape hole they prefer depending on their species. But even in this case, there still might be a shell fight. If one crab continues to harass another for whatever reason, he should be moved to an isolation tank to "chill out" for a few days. Sometimes a crab in pre-molt will exhibit more aggression than normal.
If you can determine why your crab dropped a limb and can correct the situation, he will regrow the limb again in a molt or two.
For more information, read the care sheets at http://www.hermitcrabparadise.com, or join the forum and use the search feature. The forum has very experienced crabbers who can give you very solid advice, with updated information. Please, never depend on the information pet stores give you. They only expect hermit crabs to live a year or less, but when cared for properly, they can live for decades in captivity.
What do you do if your finger swells after a crab bites you?
I wasn't aware that crabs bite you. They have claws and they can pinch you, which depending on the crab can create quite a bruise. Just like any other bruise, put some ice on it so the swelling goes down.
Can fiddler crab live without water?
Fiddler crabs come from the mangroves where there may be a regular fresh water flush so they may survive for a short while in fresh water. They will not however be able to live for long because they need the calcium and other elements in sea water in order for them to get the neccessities for shell growth.
How long do you steam snow crab clusters?
First thaw the snow crab in refrigerator overnight and boil it in a pot with small amount of water to cover the bottom of the pot and put a lid on the top and boil and steam for about 5 to 6 minutes. That should be enough and heating more time would lose the crab flavour.
How do Japanese Spider crabs reproduce?
In general, spiders mate and the female lays eggs, which she "hides" in an egg sac. The female actually stores the sperm of the male until she is "ready" to lay the eggs. In a number of different species of spider, the female will kill and eat the male, which is considerably smaller, following mating. The eggs later hatch and the young are on their own. Some young spiders might "hang around" the web of the mother, if she is that kind of spider (the black widow is an example). But though she protects them in her web, the young (which are fully formed and capable) must eventually leave to make their own way - without any more assistance from their mother. Wikipedia has a great article on the spider, and a link to the portion of it that deals with reproduction is provided. Why not surf on over, read the short piece and become an expert?
Scarlet hermit crabs are known to be very peaceful and lazy. They walk very slowly if they are moving at all.
Yes, crayfish are freshwater crustaceans. They resemble small lobsters, which they are closely related to. They are mostly found in brooks or streams with running water and with shelter from predators.
