How much tax is taken from Deal or no Deal winnings?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Winnings on game shows, or anyplace (Lotteries and Casinos come to mind quickly), as is any form of income, including the finding of a "hord', are taxable. The givor must provide a 1099 report tot the IRS of the value of what was given or won, (above certain minor exclusions). Just like when Oprah gave away a car to each in her audience, each of whom had to include the value of the car as income and pay tax. You may recall she then agreed to pay the tax for them. What she paid for them is also taxable. (The calculation that is done to determine how much she needed to give them is called a "gross up". Where a determination is made of how much the amount provided actually has to be to basically cover all the rather circular naure of what is happening. So if a 20% rate is considered the recepients tax rat for the $100 given, you don't just give $120 but more like $124.44. The recepient ends up with the $100 net). I would also refer to the first Survivior winner, who failed to pay, even claiming the show promised to, and is now in jail for several years for having done so. How much is withheld and how much the recepient finally pays can, and usually does, vary. A recepient may be able to have nothing withheld by qualifying and providing a Form W-9 statement. Mandatory withholding, done by the givor is usually at 20%, under the recepients ID number and shown on a 1099 sent to the recepient. The amount withheld is then considered paid toward any tax the recepient would owe from all sources that year, which may be more or less than the amount actually withheld depending on many things - number and amounts of deductions, amounts of other income, etc. It is basically their own tax rate. Even if withholding wasn't done, the recepient would have to make a quarterly estimated payment, just like anyone who has income that isn't shown on a Form W-2 (where the withholding is done automatically by the employer), or be subject to penalties and interest.

How does deal or no deal work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Deal or No Deal is a game show, where you have 26 cases. You have to pick a case and after so many cases the banker will offer you an amount of money because he wants your case. You are trying to get the million dollar case and it's a great game show. You try to sell your case for more money. The banker is bad, he never shows his face. The host is Howie Mandell and he's a great host. The show is on NBC.

How does deal or no deal make money?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Contestants on actual game shows do actually win money. However many people can confuse a game show with a online site. That is not a game show and on a Game show the only money you can lose is the amount you could have won. The creators of network television game shows obtain money for the show from selling commericials and that allows them to provide prizes to contestants. I am pretty sure they do.

Is deal or no deal rigged?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are Laws that were enacted after the games show scandals of the 1950s to prevent the rigging to TV game shows

No it is not and the below answer was stuck out for a very valid reason It is make believe. TV games shows risk criminal Prosecution for breaking laws if the results are fixed. However even the laws that were enacted were to stop the games shows from giving the money to the contestants. Ratings for game shows are worth money and people winning big money attract larger audiences. Wheel of Fortune is upset that they only had a single million dollar winner and very glad that they had her. Deal or No Deal tried very hard to get a big winner increasing the million dollar cases until someone actually could not lose. They won the million because both cases had a million in the cases. They are allowed to rig a game when they tell you that 13 cases have a million dollars in it because that is not cheating. Cheating would be telling the contestant to choose case number 10 because that is where the million is.

Yes it is rigged. Here is my theory:

Inside the cases, there are more than 4 amounts in them.. think of it as a cube that has 4 amounts put on each side. They dictate the outcomes by revolving the 4 different amounts, inorder to make the game more interesting.. or to dish out less money. Like an 'open & closed' sign, they can flip to whatever side they want.

Ex. Case #1 has the amounts 1mill, $0.1, $1, and $500,000 with Case #2 having 0.1, $50, $500, and $500,000. Say the person knocked down all the amounts except $0.1 and $500,000, and that cases #1 and #2 are left. They then have the ability to change the amounts..... if they chose the bankers deal, they put the $500,000 into the case they have and the $0.1 in the field to make it seem like a bad choice, hence more viewers. If they choose their own case, they put the $0.1 in the case, and the $500,000 in the field.

This way, they can dictate the whole game.. Imagine that example but with 20 other cases.. dictating the game would be so easy.

Just imagine the number of people who knew about the rigging and who could extort the show because it was fixed.
