What are blood or conflict diamonds?

A conflict diamond is a stone that is mined by people forced into this labour by threat of death, then the stone is traded for money to fund terror, mayhem on humans, civil war and so forth.

Another Answer

Conflict diamonds are diamonds that are illegally mined in Africa using modern day slave labor. They are then sold on the black market for a lower price than certified diamonds. Usually they do not make it into large diamond brokers, however the system is not perfect and sometimes larger jewelry chains will unknowingly purchase these stones.

Conflict diamonds get their name from the fact that the warring tribes in charge of the mining operations usually use the money they get to purchase weapons and to fuel their "conflicts".

According to Jeffrey E. Post, mineralogist, National Museum of Natural History -- current owner of the Hope Diamond, in his blog, he indicates that the Hope Diamond is priceless.

In April 2013, "A stunning blue diamond (5.3 carats) broke a world record today, fetching a price of 6.2 million British pounds (about $9.6 million), or about $1.8 million per carat, according to auctioneer Bonhams."

This means that if ever available, a blue diamond the size of the Hope -- not the colour, but the ice-blue colour as above -- weighing in at 45.52 carats. could be purchased at auction, possibly, for at least £81.936 or more depending on the colour and clarity of the large blue diamond.

Did George Atkinson hit harder than Jack Tatum?

I don't believe George Atkinson hit harder than Jack Tatum, but he could deliver his share of intimidating and by today's standards "Cheap shots" E. G. breaking Russ Francis nose in the 1975 playoffs against New England in Oakland, it was a vicious hit. What made George Atkinson so fearful in my opinion is that he was part of a tandem of hard hitting defensive backs, imagine going down the middle and wondering who you will be hit by first, Willie Brown, Jack Tatum or George. Neither choice would instill much pleasure into any tight end, running back or receiver, even by today's standards.

Do diamonds depreciate in value?

Diamonds may appear to depreciate in value if one is purchased commercially and sold under duress.

If you purchase a very high-quality, gem-stone diamond and pay a fair market value for it, your chances of being able to sell it for at least what you paid for it -- or more -- are higher than if you simply purchase a 'diamond' from a jeweler without doing your homework as to diamond quality.
