It turns this familiar saying into a play on words because of how difficult it is for the bad guys to kill him. They may cause him serious injury, but it is hard for them to kill him. The "Die Harder" (part 2)title announces the amplified violence in the sequel, and "Die Hard with a Vengeance" (part 3) refers to the theme of revenge.
