Where does most digestion happen and why?

Digestion starts in the mouth by chewing but most of the digestion is in the stomach where digestive juices are located.

Why are magnets dangerous if swallowed?

It seems that the danger is in swallowing more than one magnet. I could find nothing suggesting it is dangerous to swallow a SINGLE magnet. Of course, this is only likely to happen among children or those whose intellect is childlike, but the following answer was the best I could locate: "If a child swallows more than one magnet, the magnets can attract each other, drawing them together from different parts of the intestinal tract. "Once magnetically attached across bowel walls, magnets are unlikely to disengage spontaneously," says Dr. Reznik, assistant professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, N.Y. "This may cause intestinal perforation, infection and obstruction, which can be fatal." If there are vessels present between attracted bowel walls, severe hemorrhage can also occur. "Moreover, initial signs and symptoms of swallowed magnets are nonspecific, leading to delayed diagnosis and greater injury," Dr. Reznik says." What systems are used when breaking down food?

Is faeses held in the intestines?

What is the purpose of bile duct cancer trials?

clinical trials. These trials seek to compare the standard method of care with a new method, or the trials may be trying to establish whether one treatment is more beneficial for certain patients than others.

What is the role of large intestine in human digestion process?

The material passing into the large intestine consists of water with undigested matter , largely cellulose and vegetable fibres ( roughage ) , mucus and dead cells from the lining of the alimentary canal .

  • The large intestine secretes no enzymes but the bacteria in the colon digest part of the of the fibre to form fatty acids which the colon can absorb .
  • Bile salts are also absorbed and returned to the liver by the blood circulation .
  • The colon also absorbs much of the water from the undigested residues .

About 7 litres of digestive juices are poured into the alimentary canal each day . If the water from these was not absorbed by the ileum and colon , the body awould soon be dehydrated .

  • The semi-solid waste , the faeces or 'stool' , is passed into the rectum by peristalsis and is expelled at intervals through the anus . The act of expelling the faeces is called Egestion or Defecation .

So simply , there is almost no digestion , mostly reabsorbtion of water and bile .

The journey of a cheese sandwich?

The digestive process begins in the mouth. Food is partly broken down by the process of chewing and by the chemical action of salivary enzymes (these enzymes are produced by the salivary glands and break down starches into smaller molecules).

After being chewed and swallowed, the food enters the esophagus. The esophagus is a long tube that runs from the mouth to the stomach. It uses rhythmic, wave-like muscle movements (called peristalsis) to force food from the throat into the stomach. This muscle movement gives us the ability to eat or drink even when we're upside down.

The stomach is a large, sack-like organ that churns the food and bathes it in a very strong acid (gastric acid). Food in the stomach that is partly digested and mixed with stomach acids is called chyme.

After being in the stomach, food enters the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. It then enters the jejunum and then the ileum (the final part of the small intestine). In the small intestine, bile (produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder), pancreatic enzymes, and other digestive enzymes produced by the inner wall of the small intestine help in the breakdown of food.

After passing through the small intestine, food passes into the large intestine. In the large intestine, some of the water and electrolytes (chemicals like sodium) are removed from the food. Many microbes (bacteria like Bacteroides, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella) in the large intestine help in the digestion process. The first part of the food in the large intestine is excreted via the anus.

Is your appendix above your hip bone?

Trace a drop of bile from the site of production to its release into the intestinal lumen?

Bile is produced in the liver, and stored in the gallbladder. While eating, it is discharged into the lumen of the duodenum.
