Diwali

Diwali (also: Depawali, Dipavali, Dewali, Divali, Dipotsavi, Dipapratipad) marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the Lunar Calendar. It literally translated means 'Row of Lights' (from Sanskrit: dipa = lamp / awali = row, line). It celebrates the victory of Goodness over Evil and Light over Darkness - it ushers in the new year. Especially for this event people are cleaning their houses and wear new clothes. Diwali is a 5 day festival as Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Badi (Main) Diwali, Padwa and Bhaiduj. There are many different names for the days of Diwali in different regions of India (South & North India, East & West India) and in the different languages spoken in that regions (i.e. Hindi, Urdu, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Bengali). During Deepavali people pray to Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth, light, prosperity and wisdom, but also to Ganesha, the 'Remover of Obstacles' and the 'Lord of Beginnings'.

When and where did Hinduism begin?

Hinduism origninated in India, and probably goes back something like ten thousand years. It is an extremely ancient religion. No precise moment when Hinduism began has been recorded in history.

BEGINNING OF HINDUISM

Rig Veda is supposed to be the first literary document of Hinduism and is dated between 1700-1100 BC. The estimation of the age of Hinduism is based on the dating of Rig Veda.

However, Rig Vedic mantras are based on Brahmajnana, a knowledge that is independent of time, place and person. Therefore, in Rig Veda there is no mention of any real time, place or person.

For the same reason, Hinduism, doesn't have man made rules. Since Hinduism is based on laws of human instincts, it would last as long as the human race.

Therefore, unlike other religions Hinduism has no beginning. Hindus have never made an attempt to associate the beginning of Hinduism with any time, place or person.

Therefore, Hinduism is as an eternal religion, with no beginning and no end.

Supposing that it has a beginning and associating such a hypothetical beginning with a real time, place or person is against the spirit of Hinduism.

How is Diwali celebrated today in Scotland?

Well, all over the world Diwali is celebrated rather differently... almost like Christmas! In India, people celebrate Christmas with only Santa Clauses in almost every store, and they don't do much celebration. They don't usually give gifts, or set up Christmas trees in their homes, or sing jolly songs... they cook their favorite meals with their closest friends and families and have fun, and watch movies, etc. In Scotland, I am sure they celebrate Diwali the same way most Indians do. Set up lights in their windows, light candles in their homes, do Poojas (prayers) every night before dawn, offer the offerings to the Godesses first, eat before dark... etc. Diwali is the festival of lights, and each and every family celebrates Diwali almost the same. There are many different families in Scotland who enjoy celebrating Diwali. So, in conclusion, there is no exact way of proving the way people in Scotland celebrate Diwali. Hope this helps! :)
