Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest . However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali. Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the goddess of strength. In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers.

What are the main laws or beliefs relating to food?
According to Vedic (Hindu scripture) texts, one should offer all food as a sacrifice to God: "...All that you do, all that you eat, all that you offer and give away, as well as all austerities that you may perform, should be done as an offering unto Me." (Bhagavad-gita 9.27) The Gita specifies exactly what should be offered: "If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, I will accept it." (9.26) There are other references in the Vedic literature confirming that fruits, vegetables, grain, nuts and dairy products are fit for human consumption.
Food plays an important role in worship, and the food offered to God (prasada) is thought to bestow considerable religious merit, purifying body, mind and spirit. Taking prasada that has been cooked and offered with devotion inclines the mind towards spirituality. Many Hindus have an altar at home and offer their food before eating.
Meat, fish, poultry, and eggs as they are usually considered tamasic (influenced by ignorance) and are not sanctioned by either the scriptures or saints. Almost all Hindus avoid beef out of respect for the cow. In the Mahabharata - a seminal Hindu epic - one of its central characters, Bhishma, declares that no sacrifices can be made without butter. And, thus, cows became essential to the spiritual life of Hindus. Alcohol, tea and coffee are said to pollute one's consciousness, making the practice of meditation difficult. Mushrooms are thought to take on the quality of ignorance, while garlic and onions take on the quality of rajas (passion). Is there a link with vegetarianism
How do indians celebrate deepavali?
Deepavali, which literally means "row of lights," is celebrated by Hindus across the world and is the most important festival in Hinduism. In Singapore, the Festival of Lights, as it's endearingly called, falls on 26 October 2011 and is a public holiday.
Deepavali is the celebration of good over evil, and light overcoming darkness. While there are various legends that inspire this festival, the common tale is about how Narakasura won the favor of God and was blessed with the rule of a kingdom. He ruled his kingdom with tyranny, which led his subjects to appeal to Lord Sri Krishna, the divine ruler of Madura, for help. Narakasura was subsequently killed by Lord Krishna in battle and on Lord Krishna's return, the city was in complete darkness as it was the night of a new moon. To celebrate his victory and to welcome Lord Krishna, the people lit lamps, and to this day, Hindus mark the victory of Lord Krishna over King Narakasura by lighting oil lamps.
New clothes are worn during Deepavali and sweets and snacks are shared. Some Indian communities also begin the financial year on Deepavali for auspicious reasons. A traditional way to celebrate Deepavali in Singapore is to have your hands painted with henna art. Henna is a flowering plant used to dye skin, hair, fingernails and even leather and wool. These temporary tattoos are often done for free by local artists.
During Deepavali, the streets of Little India are artfully decorated and lit up in bright festive colours, transforming it with an explosion of vibrant, colourful arches and lights. Festive bazaars and numerous cultural activities such as the Indian Heritage and Craft Exhibition, Street Parade, Countdown Concert are also held. The festive stalls are decorated with wares such as fragrant flowers, garlands used during prayers, traditional oil lamps and beautiful Saris with intricate brocade patterns and glittering gems. Colourful Indian outfits, intricate costume jewellery and traditional arts and craft are also on sale. Indian delicacies can also be found in abundance during this period.
If you want to bask in the richness of the Indian culture, sit by any of the coffee shops along Little India and order a teh tarik (frothy milk tea). Watch as the crowds fill the streets and the stalls bustle with business. Come see this historically rich enclave transform into the heart of Deepavali

How do Sikhs celebrate Diwali?
you see, this is how the Sikh race celebrate birth.
Among the Hindus, the birth ceremonies start even before the birth of a child. When the mother is expecting, she is served gifts (reet) amid rejoicing among relations and neighbors. The birth of the child is announced by dai (midwife) to the members of the family. In case of a male child, she hangs some branches of mango tree at the top of the outer door of the house. An iron bangle is also tied to the cot of the mother. The senior most members in the family, usually the father-in-law or the father, consult the priest if the time of the birth is auspicious. If it is not, upai (an expiatory ceremony) is held. If the child is declared as gand mool (born under the bad influence of stars), the necessary remedies are observed by the parents of the child. For a period of 40 days, after the delivery, the mother does not mix with people and remains confined to the house, as the period is called sutak. However, this practice of quarantine is on the wane. The mother starts feeding the infant on the third day after birth. Before the first feeding, there is a ceremony and the child's aunt washes the breast of the mother with dubh grass diped in water. The child is named after consulting the priest. Now a days, many people do not bother the priest and name the child themselves. The mundan sanskar (ceremony of shaving the head of the child) is performed during the first five years.
The Sikhs do not consult priests on birth of a child. They name the child by opening the Adi Granth at random and the first letter of the first passage on the left page is taken as the first letter of the child's name. The sutak period of 40 days is not strictly observed by mothers. Some of the Sikhs perform kesi dahi ceremony by putting curd in the hair of boy- a ceremony corresponding to the mundan ceremony among the Hindus.
Among the Muslims, on the birth of a male child, the Mullah visits the house of the new born on any of the first three days following the birth and recites the kalma (holy words) in the child's ear. After three days, the mother comes out with the child in her lap and gazes at the sky and the stars. The period of impurity ends with the fast (iqiga). The child is named in consultation with the Mullah.
Circumcision (sunat) is an important ceremony among the Muslims. It is performed on boys at any time before the age of twelve.
A child born in a Christian family is christened by the priest. The ceremony is called baptism.
