The doughnut is thousand of years old. Historians have found remains of a doughnut like food in Native American remains of villages. Doughnuts similar to what we have today were in the early colonies from the Dutch called "oily cakes." In 1847 a ship captains mother made deep fried cakes for her son to take with him on the ship. How does a donut get its hole?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Of course they do. Jelly donuts would be very messy with a large hole in the middle of it.

Here in Canada besides the regular doughnut with the hole in the center and the jelly filled/sugar coated treat we have what is called a fritter. These are approximately hand sized irregular shaped, fried cakes with various fruits like apples or blueberries blended into the dough and lightly glazed. These are very popular with a large double double coffee at the local Tim Horton's.
