How can fair trade help cocoa farmers in developing countries?

Fair-trade gives a fair price for the farmers who grow the cocoa, this is so they can have enough to live on (inputs for their farms, school fees, medicine, doctor's fees, transport and clothes, ect.) plus a profit to spend or save.

In some cases, money from fair-trade is used for development projects in developing countries.

Most cocoa growing countries are mostly in less economically developed countries so they would need more help for development which fair-trade can provide to them.

Does free trade equate to fair trade?

It exists in namesake, but not in actuality. The organizations that have been established to support and reinforce free trade actually contain stipulations and loopholes for some barriers. Even NAFTA admits that it removed "most barriers" to free trade. More and more countries have set up free trade agreements but they only apply to certain countries and not others, and they also apply to certain limited goods and not all goods. Therefore, in reality, free trade does not really exist.

Reasons why fair trade is not fair?

maybe because not all the farmers in developing countries can benefit and be part of it... Im not sure, this is just a suggestion, however there are lots of logic reasons for which fair trade cannot be inclusive for all the farmers, one of this reason is because otherwise all the farmers would produce food to export and not to local consumption, worsening the food security and the balance of payment of poor countries (who would have to import food themselves).

I dont agree fair trade is the best thing that could ever happen. Think of all the kids that are slaves like seriously wow.

Many people never think about what the fair trade mark means, thinking its just a sign that makes people think about Fair Trade. But there is more to the blue, green and black symbol than people think. The fair trade mark shows that the product it is on is "Fair Trade certified" meaning that it has been grown and produced from a fair trade farmer and this trade mark has been copy righted so that unless they are actually produced from a fair trade farmer and cannot be forged by any farmers who are not from fair trade. The mark of Fair Trade is used in over 50 countries around the world.

Difference between world trade and fair trade?

Fair trade is something for our 3rd world. When you buy something like fair trade chocolate the poor people who make the cocoa beans are guaranteed the same good money every time. So the poor people never go too hungry if the price of cocoa beans dropped because they will be payed the same.

Generally world trade is just the world trading. Like we cannot grow grapes so France would grow them and we will trade with France and other countrys for other objects for something that we grow or our money.

A fair trade commodity (cotton, coffee, apples, or whatever) is produced, harvested, and transported by people who receive a fair living wage for their work.

In some circumstances, monopoly enables a company to keep wages in an area unreasonably low; so farmers, for example, might be almost slaves, for what little they get in return for their crops. That would not be fair trade.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of fair trade?

The advantage is, the grower/ supplier receives better money, hopefully being able to afford a more secure future for themselves and their workers/ families.

The disadvantage is, you pay extra for a fair trade product.

I expect a further disadvantage is much of the extra you have to pay may not go entirely to the grower/ supplier. It could be siphoned off by middlemen, e.g. transporters.
