You are probably thinking of Fruma-Sarah, who is the butcher's dead wife. She appears as a ghost in Tevye's "dream", threatening to kill Lazar Wolfe's, the butcher's, new bride, Tzeitel.

The hero or lead protagonist was Tevvye the dairyman. However the TITLE character which was non-speaking the Fiddler on the Roof- was played by the celebrated violinist Isaac Stern! one should distinguish between Lead character and Title role- Isaac Stern had the title role of the Fiddler.

The most famous Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof is named Chaim Topol. He was born in Tel Aviv in Israel. He did the show on Broadway as well as played Tevye in the movie version. After doing the movie he went on tour as Tevye in the stage show.
