Fiddler on the Roof is about the changing of traditions in a small Jewish village in Russia. Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his wife, Golde, struggle to raise their five daughters. The three older daughters are all hoping for the village matchmaker to bring them husbands. Tzeital (oldest) is already in love with the tailor. Hodel (second oldest) falls in love with Perchik, a newcomer to the village. And Chava (third oldest) falls in love with Fyedka, a Russian soldier. By the end of the show, the village residents are being kicked out of their village by Russian soldiers, Tzeital and Motel are married, Hodel moved to Siberia to join Perchik who was arrested, and Chava is disowned for marrying Fyedka.

ALL of the characters in the movie were Jewish, including the 3 daughters...except for the Cossacks who were Russian (the bad guys).

I just discovered the anomaly of 'Tradition' showing up in reggae. I originally heard the tune pop up in a song by Richie Spice, and then heard a completely different song my another artist. Hearing two exact melody lines pop up in two songs that are not related made me search out what the hell the melody was, whether it be a folk song or some tribute to another artist. Anyway, I stumbled upon someone's comment on Youtube, and...there you have it.

The two songs I know of, with the tradition melody, are as follows:

There may be more, and I'll obviously continue to search for them now that I know what the tune is.

The names of Tevye's five daughers are here from oldest to youngest:

Tzeitel, Hodel, Chava, Shprintze, and Bielke. Chava Tzeital and Hodel are the main sisters.

I think Zero Mostel first played him on the stage. When the movie was made he was unavailable, so the role went to the Israeli actor who goes by the name of Topol. Not much good with musicals, so you may wish to verify.

Cast of Characters:

Shaindel: the Fiddler.

Tevye: the lead; the father of the household, traditional, loving.

Golde: Tevye's wife, stereotypical Jewish mother.

Tzeitel: Tevye's oldest daughter, about nineteen. Is in love with Model.

Hodel: Tevye's 2nd oldest daughter, about seventeen. Falls in love with Perchik.

Chava: Tevye's 3rd oldest daughter, about fifteen. Falls in love with Fyedka.

Shprintze/Bielke: Tevye's two youngest daughters.

Grandma Tzeitel: Golde's mother; she is dead now.

Model: the Taylor; is in love with Tzeitel.

Perchik: the traveling student, teaches the girls; falls in love with Hodel.

Fyedka: the Russian man who visits Anatevka; falls in love with Chava.

Lazar Wolf: the butcher that is smitten with Tzeitel.

FrumaSarah: Lazar Wolf's first wife; she is dead also.

Mordcha: the innkeeper.

Rabbi: Anatevka's Jewish spiritual leader.

Mendel: the Rabbi's son.

Avram: the bookseller.

Tevye

Avram is actually Tevye the milkman and who the story is entirely about. The reason you cannot find it on Wikipedia is probably due to the fact Avram is known as Tevye.

The fiddler represents tradition.

Hodel, Tzeital, Chava, Shprintze, and Bielke. Tzeital is the oldest who marries the tailor. Hodel is the second who marries Perchik, the student. Chava is the third oldest who marries the non-Jewish Russian, Fyedke.

The basic plot is a poor family living in Russia in 1905. The family has the main character/father, Tevye, also as the narrator. There is also a mother, and five daughters (3 of which are more important to the story than the other 2- and their names are Tzeitel, Hodel, and Chava). all 3 girls want to get married. 2 of them do successfully, with the reluctant(after all, their father Tevye really believes in tradition) permission of their father. (Hodel does have to move away to a different part of the country, though). Chava, the youngest, is not granted permission, but she marries her love anyway. Eventually, the family must leave their house to overcome difficulties in their part of the country. the end of the movie shows everyone from Anatevka (the setting- a village) walking off to find new and hopefully better lives.

The Fiddler was the non-speaking ( title) character who was portrayed by real life violin maestro Isaac Stern. this is a popular trick question. the Lead character was of course played by Zero Mostel, but the TITLE character was played- literally on all four strings, by Isaac Stern. as far as is known his only movie role. the survival of Jewish culture in a hostile environment was suggestive by the notion of the (Fiddler on the Roof).
