Fuel Cells

Fuel Cells convert an electrochemical reaction to electticity. There are applications that are sationary, portable and those used in transportation. All Fuel Cells are composed of an anode, cathode and electrolyte and are typically characterized by the composition of he electrolyte. The most common is the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM). Others are Phospheric Acid (PAFC), Solid Oxide (SOFC), Molten Carbonate (MCFC) and Direct Methane (DMFC).

Do Hydrogen fuel cell have impact on society?

Yes, of course. It takes raw materials and engergy to produce a hydrogen fuel cell. It then takes raw materials and energy to produce the hydrogen fuel. However, the result of the hydrogen fuel cell combustion is water - this is a significant improvement over regular internal combustion engines which produce all kinds of exhaust fumes.

Assuming hydrogren fuel cells become wide spread then society will change in many ways from new jobs and new fuel refineries/distribution to new language/slang for the HFCs etc...

Can you use aluminum as catalyst in an alkaline fuel cell?

If you mean Aluminum metal, then answer is No. This is because aluminum will dissolve in alkali as aluminate ions.

Principle of operation of a fuel cell?

A fuel cell generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction between a fuel (like hydrogen) and an oxidant (like oxygen). The fuel is oxidized at the anode, releasing electrons that flow through an external circuit to the cathode, where they combine with the oxidant and protons to produce water and heat. This process generates electricity that can be used to power electrical devices.

Does hydrogen fuel cells pollute?

No they don't When hydrogen (electrode in the cell) reacts with oxygen ( catalyst in the cell), it's chemical reaction converts the hydrogen gas to negatively charged electrons (-e) and positively charged hydrogen ions (H+). As for the pollution factor, the ONLY Bi-product from hydrogen cells is Water (H2O). I hope you understood all that (as you would need to know how a battery cell works).

How does a fuel cell car works?

it uses electricity to turn water into pure oxygen and hydrogen then uses those gasses to produce electricityand it does this using a reversible Proton Exchange Membrane
