Gangsters carve out territories in cities and in towns because that is where they sell illegal drugs and illegal weapons which is how they make money. They also make the people in those neighborhoods feel that they are protecting them, but really they are imprisoned by gangs and don't realize it.

Some other forms of "gangs" are called Chapters, Associations, congregations, affiliations and groups...So as you see the term "gang" can apply to any group of people either in a positive or negative meaning.
