Has Glenn Miller's plane ever been found?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There was no real search immediately afterwards. The Battle of the Bulge began the next day* and no one was even aware that the plane was missing for several days. There were simply no available resources to search for it given the magnitude of the conflict.

In the 1980s a wealthy young British businessman financed a search for the plane and claimed to have found some artifacts but nothing was ever proven. A BBC investigation in 2004 determined that all that would probably remain of the small C-64 plane would be the engine block, and that a search would be near-futile because the block would be buried with thousands of years worth of other debris on the bottom of the English Channel.

(*) In fact, the run-up to the Battle of the Bulge may have contributed to the crash. All non-essential air traffic had been halted for that reason as well as bad weather, and bombing sorties were very heavy. The fact that Miller's plane was making an unauthorized flight AND hundreds of returning bombers were dropping unused shells into the Channel before landing was a prescription for tragedy.

When was glenn miller famous?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The C-64 Norseman transport plane carrying Glenn Miller took off from Twinwood Airfield in England around 1:15 pm British War Time on December 15, 1944. Radio contact was lost shortly thereafter and the plane was never seen again.

Recent research by the University of Colorado found that the Norseman had a history of carburetor problems so despite many other hypotheses, the most likely cause of his death was that the fuel line iced up and the engine stalled over the English Channel.

Who was Mitch Miller?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For over 15 years, beginning in 1948 and lasting into the early '60s, Mitch Miller was a major force in the recording industry. He was not only one of the most powerful men in the music business for much of that time, as the head of A&R (artists and repertory) for the pop division at Columbia Records, but he was also one of that label's most popular recording artists in his own right, responsible for dozens of chart singles and a string of top-selling LPs, and also hosting his own top-rated primetime network television music show. And that pop music career followed a decade and a half as a successful working classical musician.

Do Glenn Miller's children still run his band?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They were never involved in running the orchestra. Neither showed any special interest in music (they were adopted and grew up after his disappearance) so the band was run by the corporation that Miller had established to produce his music.

Leaders have included Tex Beneke, Ray McKinley, Buddy DeFranco, Dick Gearhart, Buddy Morrow, Peanuts Hucko (very briefly), Larry O'Brien, and the current conductor, Gary Tole.

Miller's children have only become involved in musical work in the last decade or so, and then only from a legal and administrative standpoint.

It topped the charts for 13 straight weeks in 1940 in the U.S. and one year later was featured in the movie Sun Valley Serenade. In 1999, National Public Radio (NPR) included the 1939 Glenn Miller recording on RCA Bluebird on the NPR 100, the list of "The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century".

How long did Glenn Miller live?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Alton Glenn Miller ranks as the most popular musician of the first half of the 20th century. He was arguably the first pop music "superstar": in terms of the number of top-10 recordings sold and recordings sold as a percentage of the entire market, his career still outranks even the Beatles and Elvis despite lasting only 3 and a half years.

Glenn Miller was arguably the best and most innovative band leader of the 1930s and 1940s. During WW2, joining the military, he took his music to the troops. His life was lost when his aircraft failed to arrive in Europe from England. Famous for tight instrument interplay and the clarinet lead his music is still popular today.

There is an enormous amount of information available, far more than it would make sense to try to rewrite here. You can type his name into Google or Ask and find literally hundreds of thousands of links. I've put just a couple of them here. There is also an excellent biography "Glenn Miller and his Orchestra", by George T. Simon.

Who conducts the Glenn Miller Orchestra?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I don't know what you mean by "it", because there is so much to choose from. The Glenn Miller band had more Top Ten hits than any artist or band before or since, including today's groups.

Miller himself was a renowned arranger and did many of the civilian band's early charts, including In the Mood. However, most of the band's later arrangements were written by Jerry Gray, Bill Finegan, and Billy May.

Arrangements for the AAF band were written primarily by Jerry Gray, Norman Leyden, Perry Burgett, and Harry Katzman.

How important is Glenn Miller?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Many critics consider him to have been the first pop-music superstar. He was by far the most popular musician of the first half of the 20th century, By several measures including market share and number and duration of top-ten hits, even the Beatles and Elvis Presley were unable to match his popularity.

His musical stylings influenced performers into the 1950s and 1960s, including Billy May, Bill Finegan, Eydie Gorme, and others. The Beatles gave credit to his singing group, the Modernaires, as a strong influence on their early work.

In spite of the fact that the original orchestra hasn't existed for almost 70 years and most people who heard it in person are no longer alive, there are actually more Glenn Miller fans today than back then. In the age of heavy metal and rock, interest remains so high that Glenn Miller Productions operates three "official" orchestras in the US and the EU, while dozens of other bands around the world regularly perform his music unofficially. A quick search of Amazon.com turns up hundreds of CDs and downloads, quite a tribute to a man whose entire public career was less than five years.

What is the last name of the male singer named Ray in the Glenn Miller Orchestra?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Ray Eberle.

He was the brother of Bob Eberly who sang with Jimmy Dorsey for several years. Ray changed the spelling of his last name to avoid confusion. Unlike Bob, Ray wasn't a well-trained singer and Miller was often criticized for hiring him. They eventually parted ways in mid-1942, shortly before the band broke up.

After the war Ray performed many of his earlier hits, sometimes as a single act but more often with his own band or with a reunion group led by fellow Miller alumnus Tex Beneke.

Ray was an admitted alcoholic, an illness that led to his relatively early death in 1979. His daughter Jan and nephew Bob Jr. continue the Eberle vocal tradition. Jan has in fact performed with an English band led by Glenn's nephew John Miller, so there are new Miller-Eberle recordings nearly 70 years later!

What happened to the adopted children of Glenn Miller and Helen Burger Miller?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For the first few years after Glenn's disappearance she was actively involved in the corporations he had set up, primarily Glenn Miller Productions, and in working with his estate to re-launch the orchestra under the direction of lead saxophonist and vocalist Tex Beneke.

She was also faced with raising their two adopted children alone, so as relations with the Beneke-led band deteriorated during the late 1940s she moved away from direct involvement with Glenn's music. In 1953 and 1954 she assisted with aspects of the biopic The Glenn Miller Story, starring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson. There is speculation that her disagreements with Tex Beneke over the band's musical direction were in part responsible for the fact that he was entirely written out of the script.

During the 1950s and early 60s Helen Miller was almost completely uninvolved with her late husband's music, except for giving occasional interviews to close friends such as biographer (and former Miller musician and confidant) George T. Simon. Notably, Simon refused to either deny or confirm the heartbreaking rumor that Helen had kept many of Glenn's personal effects in their bedroom and even prepared his bed every evening, just in case he should miraculously return ...

Helen Burger Miller died in 1966 at age 64. Her passing was mentioned in some newspapers but received little other notice.

She is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena, CA

Did Glenn Miller's wife ever marry again?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

By all accounts yes, for most of his marriage to Helen Burger. He spent as much time as he could with her and doted on his first adopted child. (The second was adopted after he was serving in Europe.)

Recently there have been rumors - and I emphasize that they are nothing but that - that the pressures of wartime service led him to an affair with a woman in Paris during 1944. Even so he remained devoted to Helen. When his health began to fail in late '44 he wrote to his brother Herb to make sure Helen and the children would be well-cared for if he should not return to the U.S. As we know now, the plane crash that took his life in December 1944 made those preparations absolutely necessary.

What was Glenn Millers biggest hit?

Without question, In the Mood is the most-remembered tune.

During his lifetime, Chattanooga Choo Choo was the biggest seller - it was only the second recording to every sell a million copies at that time, and was awarded the first Gold Record.

Is Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band of relation to Glenn Miller?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

That would have been interesting, but the answer is unfortunately no.

The Steve Miller who is Glenn's son was adopted when Glenn was in the AAF, so he had no real contact with his father and had no musical inheritance*. At one point he was employed as a gunsmith.

(*) The musical genes run strongly in the family. Glenn's brother Herb was a trumpeter, his nephew John now leads Herb's orchestra, and niece Wynne is a dancer and entertainer.

Who were the singers with Glenn Miller's band?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The individual vocalists most associated with the civilian band were Marion Hutton and Ray Eberle, along with Tex Beneke who also played 1st saxophone; they were later joined by the Modernaires vocal group.

The major vocalists with the AAF Band were Johnny Desmond along with Artie Malvin and the Crew Chiefs. Drummer Ray McKinley also sang from time to time, and the band was joined by any number of guest singers such as Bing Crosby, Irene Manning, Dinah Shore, and others.

Did Steve Miller die?

User Avatar

Asked by Georgianna Rohan

Steve MIller is still alive. There have been many internet rumors about him dying, however they are all false. He suposedly died on September 11, 2001 (unrelated to the WTC plane crashes), in 2002 he died again of a drug over dose, in 2003 it was a car accident, and I heard in 2005 he died yet again, only this time of cancer. As of 2011 he is still alive and ocasionally recording. He is also working as a College guest artist for musical arts.

Did Glenn Miller have siblings?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most definitely. He was famously distant, described by one acquaintance as being as cold as a fish on ice in a market, but once he got to know a person he formed a lasting bond.

Among his band members he was especially close to Trigger Alpert, Tex Beneke, and Ray McKinley. Beneke was somewhat of a "pet" and was accused of being protected by Miller, but on the rare occasions when he did mess up, Miller could be as unforgiving as with anyone else who didn't do their job well.

He was also close to Cecil Madden, his producer for BBC broadcasts in England. Madden later helped the Beatles to fame, was knighted, and became head of the BBC, but always considered his greatest regret to be his inability to keep Miller from taking that last flight in December 1944.
