The Golden Gate Bridge's official color is International Orange. During it's construction, there was much debate about what color the bridge would be painted on completion. Some people simply liked gray or black. The Navy disagreed because it would blend in with San Francisco's heavy fog therefore making it easier for ships to crash into it. The Navy suggested that it be painted with Black and yellow stripes so that it could be seen easier! Eventually, people noticed how the steel on the bridge rusted, forming an orange red color. The Navy accepted this because it was still easy to spot on foggy days. And so International Orange was chosen for the bridges color!

Many wanted to build the bridge. The proposal finally took place in 1916 in the San Fransisco Bulletin by former engineering student James Wilkins. They estimated the cost of the bridge for about 100 million super super impractical for the time. The asked bridge engineers the question on if it could be done for less. Joseph Strauss answered it and was very ambitious having built 300-400 bridges already. He said he could do a draw bridge there for 17 million. Strauss was chief engineer in charge of overall design and construction of the bridge project. However, because he had little understanding or experience with cable-suspension designs,responsibility for much of the engineering and architecture fell on other expert..

There is a jumper who attempted suicide by jumping off that may help your thought process if you, or anyone is thinking about trying to jump off of this deadly bridge. The moment he let go, he realized he didn't want to do it. He realized most of the things in his life were fixable, and those that were not, weren't worth dying over. He regretting ever attempting it as SOON as he let go of the rail and began to fall (true story...look it up). Don't let this be you ... As the story goes, in a stroke of grand luck, and after some time in ICU he recovered and made it out of the jump alive. A boat picked him up immediately after the jump because he was unconscious from the impact otherwise he was a sure goner. The injuries he had from hitting the water were 50/50 in his chances of survival AFTER he got to the hospital... he was quite lucky and now he speaks out about why not to ever attempt what he tried.

The Golden Gate is roughly 190-225 feet. A fall such as that breaks bones, and can damage internal organs. One lucky jumper said he felt the explosion of the fragments of his back discs ripping through his stomach upon impact. He had a collapsed lung, and a concussion as well. He was one of the lucky ones that happened to survive. Hitting the water from 200 feet in the air will result in some bad injuries most of the time, my friend ...the jump is generally fatal. Realistically sure.. you CAN survive it, several people have over the years but the odds are against you and most perish. For every one that does happen to survive there are several more that didn't make it. Let's put it this way ... when one person does survive it makes the headlines as an odds breaker. There are many more in between that are simply down and out. Every single one that jumped and did manage to survive the fall says it was not a pleasant experience in the least after finally being released from the hospital from their injuries... ... Supposedly the jump has has as low as 90% to 98% fatality rate.
