Grasshoppers were designed with legs that hop incredible distances and mouths to consume amazing quantities of vegetation. Since they do not build a nest to return home to each night, they have no need to move materials. They simply hop where the next meal happens to be.
Do grasshoppers live in the desert?
Personally, being a desert rat myself, I have many freinds that have sadly lost thier lives to the perril of flamingo birds. For years flamingos have had disagreements with us desert rats but I believe that they are taking this perticular argument to far, and we being rather small can not possibly eat them.
Thank you for your help.

Correction: Although grasshoppers are generally plant eaters, they don't mind eating smaller creatures that they eat along with the plants that they are sitting on. In fact, in parts of Africa where locust swarms sometimes occur (probably in parts of Asia and America as well) the people living there are pleased when locusts come in, as long as they have enough to eat when the locusts have left, because the locusts eat a lot of pests on the plants, such as ticks.
Also there is at least one lot of "long-horned grasshoppers" (Some people call long-horned grasshoppers katydids.) making up the sub-family Saginae, that eat practically only the insects that they can catch. Some of them at least occur in South Africa They have specially spiky legs for catching their prey. Some Australian grasshoppers that either are in the same subfamily or a very similar one, mostly eat cicadas.
The following statements are generally true, but as you can see from what I have said, are not always true.

Actually, MOST grasshoppers have wings, but not all of them do. Regarding grasshopper wings, it seems there are basically four groups of grasshoppers: those who have full use of their wings, those who have only partial use of their wings, those who have wings they can't use, and those who never grow any wings at all. To see the above information and learn more about the grasshopper, see this website: http://animals.howstuffworks.com/insects/grasshopper-info1.htm [Note: Look for the section entitled, "How Does a Grasshopper Move About?"]

Yes, grasshoppers produce sounds to attract mates and protect their territory. Unlike crickets, grasshoppers do not make sound by rubbing their wings together. They make sound using stridulation or crepitation. Stridulation is rubbing one body part against another, crepitation is when the grasshoppers snap their hindwings rapidly as they fly.

Can you keep a grasshopper as a pet?
It depends on alot of things. What you feed them? How clean their enclosure is? And How big the enclosure is? Grasses, vegtibles, and leaves are great food sourses. A gut load gel is also acceptable (As a supplement) You should clean the uneaten, dried out or moldy food as soon as posible. The cleaner the cage the happier you pet will be. A five gallon cage is ideal for one or two grasshoppers. Be sure to have things to climb on such as branches. Ventilation is also a very important aspect, partially screen or all screen lids are perfect. If all goes well than a grass hopper should live for over the expect life span (30 days) (Mine of lived for 60 days and are still going strong)
