What are the similarities of an eagle and great horned owl?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

These two owls are quite similar in many ways. The body and facial disk are a similar shape and size, the wings are built the same way and have a close size too. The pattern in their plumage is usually similar; dark blotches or streaks on the breast and underparts, with closer, more irregular blotches and spots in the wings and tail. Behind all these dark patches, Great Horned owls are usually tawny brown, while many Eagle owls have light brown, tawny-grey or sometimes cream. The ear tufts on a Great Horned are usually thicker and bushier, but they are about the same length. The eye colour is one of the most easily noticed differences. Great Horned owls have yellow or amber coloured eyes, while Eagle owls have dark orange or red eyes.

Would a eagle owl eat a great horned owl?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Conflicts between these two species evidently have occurred, there are stories in the text of horned owls killing red tails at night, while the hawks were sleeping, and there are reports of red tails killing unaware horned owls during daylight hours. Both species are capable killers, with powerful talons, and are very oppurtunistic predators, taking whatever species they can bring down. If the two met in a dusk conflict, for example, and both were at full strength, the hawk would probably kill the owl, for it has a more powerful beak, while the weaker bill of the owl is used primarily to dismember its prey.
