Brian takes four baths a day in the book "Hatchet" as a way to cleanse himself of the smell of the skunk that sprayed him. The skunk spray caused him intense discomfort and he wanted to get rid of the smell as quickly as possible.

Ultimately, the survival kit played a crucial role in keeping Brian alive during his ordeal in the wilderness.

In "Hatchet," dipping his hands in the water was nearly the last act of Brian's life because he was severely injured from a moose attack and the cold water caused intense pain. Brian's body was in a weakened state, and he was fearful that the pain and shock might cause him to lose consciousness and drown.
