Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs can. It happens when the hermit crab is changing its shell and falls over or when the hermit crab is dead it slides out or falls out of its shell! Sadly they can't always get back in there shells and die.

This is a difficult question. Odds are pretty good that you have some sort of marine hermit crab but there are thousands of marine hermit crab species. Without more specific information like size, color, shell type, location, etc. there's no way to know for sure.

This happend to me once. I had a hermit crab for about 5 months and then its shell got too small for its body, so we had to buy a larger shell so it can go back in it. If it doesnt go back in it some how dehydrates.

Yes, land hermit crabs do mate. If you mean in captivity...yes and no. They will mate and sometimes you will even get fertilized eggs, but you can not raise them to be surviving baby hermit crabs in captivity unless you can duplicate the ocean.

oh yeah i had little white worms in my hermit crabitat a couple of weeks ago...sift the sand or if that will take too long put all the sand on a tray and sit it in the sun for a couple of hrs or put it in the oven. check online to see if they are harmful to our little creepy-crawly friends and check how long it takes for it to bake in an oven! hope this helps! xo

It depends on where you find them. Are they in the rocks or tidepools. They are just small crabs waiting to become big crabs like you find in the ocean. Otherwise, are they in the sand, they are actually called sandcrabs. Sandcrabs are usually grey or silver in color with many legs and look kind of like "rolly pollys". You can dig for them each time a wave goes back out to the ocean. The crabs in the rocks, or the tiny, tiny ones you see on the sand are just little crabs that have hatched and are waiting to become big crabs before they go out to the ocean.

you should leave them alone and let them fight it out, if the fighting continues for more than a couple minutes, separate them.

If it happens again put the crabs in time out, they will eventually learn that fighting is not allowed

the shells hermies use, are sea snail shells. The snail dies, gets washed up, and at lowtide the hermit crab will remove the snail and ocuppy the shell. If a hermie also sees another hermie with a shell they want, they will fight to the death to get the shell.

about 80-100$. If you buy playground sand at a hardware store instead of pet store, it will save you money. Also, look for stuff you can use around your house or at craft stores. You can use sea shells from craft stores for their food and 2 water dishes; a small clay flowerpot for a hidey hole; pretty much any nonmetal thing. The two most expensive items are the cage and heater, which are about 20$ each (if you get a good 10 gallon cage with a secure lid)

Hermit crabs change shells once and a while so put about maybe 3 or 2 per hermit crab.I have my own hermit crab and i thought this question.But my hermit crabs havent been changing shells a lot.And make sure you use the right size because hermit crabs dont change shells if that shell is to small or to big or have holes in it.Have Fun With Your Hermit crab

They arent squealing, they are chirping. This is how they communicate with one another. But if you only have one, it could just be chirping for fun :)

Yes, out of the water to a giant orgy on the beach. No kidding, they start in the morning, and storm the nearest beach, usually a full moon in August/September.

Once the giant mass is assembled, they shed their shells and fornicate through the moonlit night. As the sun comes up, it resembles a scene from New Orleans, everyone is scrambling to pick up a new shell and heads back out to sea.

You don't. While it's suggested that you bathe your hermit crab when you first bring it home to flush debris out of it's shell and look for mites, as long as your provide pools deep enough for your crab to get their shell opening into, you do not need to bath it.

no they cant im afraid unless they were born in tap water. otherwise they can only live in salt water. also, you cannot put salt into water and call that 'salt water' because that is simply dumb.

Hermit crabs should stay in a tub of lukewarm water for around 2-3 minutes. You shouldn't bathe them any longer than 3 or 4 minutes. Depending on the type of hermit crab, there is a possibility that the hermit crab could drown, so watching the hermit crab moving is a good thing.

Bathe your hermit crab once a week. If your hermit crab is not used to taking baths, start giving him/her baths once a month and when your crabs are used this give him/her baths once a week. Clean your crab for at least 15 minutes or wait until your crab climbs out of his bathtub.
