How fast was an iguanodon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Iguanodon wasn't the fastest dinosaur known. All we know of dinosaurs is from the fossils we find of them, and from comparisons of those fossils to animals that are still around. For this reason it is extremely difficult to determine the top speed of any dinosaur. What we do know is that some of the fastest dinosaurs were the relatively small ones with very long legs. These include some raptors like Velociraptor, Ornithomimids such as Gallimimus and Ornithomimus. If you include the fact that birds evolved from dinosaurs, than the fastest animal in the world, the Peregrine Falcon, is a dinosaur. When it dives it can exceed 200 miles per hour!

A dinosaur that lived long ago. :)

Answer2: The ornithischians ("bird hipped") were one of two general classes of dinosaurs as determined by the structure of their hips. Those in this category had a hip structure similar to that of a bird but, of course, vastly larger. Some were small in overall size, others huge. The iguanodon reached lengths of 30 feet [9 m]

Who were the enemy of iguanodon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The main enemy of the iguanodon, as of many of the dinosaurs, was the Tyrannosaurus Rex. But, as it was back in the dinosaur age, any carnivore larger than a specific type of dinosaur was the enemy, so the iguanodon had quite a few enemies.

How did iguanadon eat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Iguanodon was a plant eater, or herbivore. Using its beak, it would have cropped off the leaves it was going to eat and then it would have chewed them to aid digestion. Chewing was a new adaptation that didn't exist in many other dinosaurs at that time.

Was the iguanodon a plant or flesh eater?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Iguanodon was a plant eater, or herbivore. Its teeth were designed for plant eating, and their jaws had evolved the ability to chew, which assisted with digesting vegetation. Chewing isn't a necessary adaptation in carnivores, because meat doesn't contain cell walls and is thus easier to digest than plants.

What were the advantages and disadvantages of an Iguanodon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Like any organism, Iguanodon had far too many adaptations to count (considering even things such as a heartbeat or an eyeball are adaptations). One of its unique adaptations was a large, sharp claw on each thumb, which they may have used to defend themselves. They generally walked on four legs, but they could run on two legs, or stand on two legs so that they could get a better view of their surroundings and spot predators. They were plant eaters, but vegetation is hard to digest. One of their biggest adaptations was their ability to chew. Before that, plant eating dinosaurs simply swallowed their food, but chewing allowed Iguanodon to digest their food more thoroughly, and cheeks kept the food in their mouth, instead of falling out the sides.

A disadvantage that Iguanodon had was that it was an herbivore and therefor had predators.

Why do Iguanodon's have a rearly long claw on each foot?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Iguanodon doesn't have a long claw on each foot. They do have a long claw on each thumb, which they may have used for defense. Dinosaurs that do have a long claw on each foot are dromaeosaurs, such as Velociraptor and Troodon, and they used these long, curved claws for hunting by stabbing and slashing their prey in soft areas with blood vessels.

Why do scientists think that the Iguanodon is a herbivore?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are a number of clues that scientists look for to determine the diet of an animal. One is the shape of the teeth. In Iguanodon, the teeth aren't sharp or serrated, and are designed for chewing plants, not killing or dismembering animal prey. Another clue is the claws. If an animal has a lot of sharp claws, it is more likely to be carnivorous. With the exception of its thumb claws, Iguanodon didn't have sharp claws, and its thumb claw was probably used for self defense. Another hint is the jawbone. The jaw wasn't designed to bite down firmly on prey like the jaws of a carnivorous dinosaur such as Tyrannosaurus or Allosaurus.
