The Ivory Coast and Nigeria are two current hotbeds of criminal activity in the banking sector. Nigeria's penal code numbers have even given a name to a popular scam: The 419 Fraud.

The way 419 Fraud, more generally called 'Advance Fee Fraud' works is that you are contacted (quite unexpectedly) by a person claiming to have a large sum of money to transfer to you, and only needs you to make arrangements for paying some small money transfer fee in order to release the funds. That's the whole story. You pay the small fee (perhaps a few hundred dollars), and your big payout never arrives.

Alternately, you are asked to cash a check for items you have for sale, and the check is too large, so you are asked to return the overage. Surprise! Their check bounces, but your money was real.

Alternately, you are hired to act as a clearing house for such checks, cashing them and redistributing them, while keeping your percentage. None of the check payouts are real... except the checks you write.

There are myriad variations, but there is one theme that is universal: Your money gets stolen, and you get stuck with thousands of dollars in bad checks. And, you won't even get any sympathy because everybody with an IQ over 70 who has had a computer for more than two weeks already knows about all this.

Please... pretty please with sugar on top... break off contact with the fraudster who nearly has you in his clutches, and abandon this futile effort. Nobody is really emailing you to offer you millions of dollars in stolen money confiscated from some expatriate African prince. Really. Sorry.
