Lucille Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix's mom, died on February 1, 1958. She was hospitalized twice for cirrhosis of the liver, and was hospitalized again in mid-January with hepatitis. She was found unconscious in the alley beside the tavern she often went to, and she was taken to a hospital again and died a few hours later from a ruptured spleen.

That's chile, not child. He most definitely was using voodoo to coax the sounds he made out of the equipment he used. He was a "magic boy" who could play remembered jazz and R&B lines note for note. He was "Experienced", "not necessarily stoned, but beautiful". He burned his already on fire guitar as sacrifice to the music he loved. If that ain't voodoo, than what is? It was the other way around. In the late 60's Gibbons was with a Texas band calledThe Moving Sidewalks. They put out an album, but were not know outside Texas. They did some touring as as a warm-up for Hendrix. Hendrix was a big name at that point and Gibbons was rather in awe, but managed to leave a big impression on Hendrix who declared on 'The Tonight Show' that the best guitarist in American was a fellow down in Texas no one had heard of named Billy Gibbons.

Hendrix also gave 'Reverend' Gibbons a slightly damaged 50's pink Fender Stratocaster which according to legend Gibbons used may years later to Record La Grange and several other early hits. But the pink Strat owned by two of Rock's greatest is a legend unto itself and was featured in a Guitar Player magazine back in the 85.

Hendrix owned and used a variety of guitars during his career. His guitar of choice however, and the instrument that became most associated with him, was the Fender Stratocaster. He started playing the model in 1966 and thereafter used it prevalently in his stage performances and recordings.

Hendrix bought many Stratocasters and gave some away as gifts. The original sunburst Stratocaster that Hendrix burnt at the Astoria in 1967, and that he kept as a souvenir, was given to Frank Zappa by a Hendrix roadie at the 1968 Miami Pop Festival; Zappa assumed it was the one Hendrix had played there.

Hendrix used right-handed guitars, turned upside down and restrung for left-hand playing. This had an important effect on his guitar sound: because of the slant of the Strat's bridge pickup, his lowest string had a bright sound while his highest string had a mellow sound, the opposite of the Stratocaster's intended design. Heavy use of the tremolo bar necessitated frequent tuning; Hendrix often asked the audience for a "minute to tune up", as heard on many live bootlegs of his performances.

In addition to Stratocasters, Hendrix was also photographed playing Fender Jazzmasters, Duosonics, two different Gibson Flying Vs, a Gibson Les Paul, three Gibson SGs, a Gretsch Corvette he used at the 1967 Curtis Knight sessions and miming with a right strung Fender Jaguar on the "Top Of The Pop's" TV show, as well as several other brands. Hendrix borrowed a Fender Telecaster from Noel Redding to record "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze", used a white Gibson SG Custom for his performances on the Dick Cavett show in the summer of 1969, and the Isle of Wight film shows him playing his second Gibson Flying V. While Jimi had previously owned a Flying V that he'd painted with a psychedelic design, the Flying V used at the Isle of Wight was a unique custom left-handed guitar with gold plated hardware, a bound fingerboard and "split-diamond" fret markers that were not found on other 60s-era Flying Vs.

On December 4, 2006, one of Hendrix's 1968 Fender Stratocaster guitars with a sunburst design was sold at a Christie's auction for USD$168,000.

Bassist Billy Cox (who would later be part of the Band of Gypsies group that Hendrix debuted a few months after Woodstock), drummer Mitch Mitchell (from The Experience), guitarist Larry Lee and two percussionists performed with Hendrix during the festival and Hendrix's Woodstock group was the largest band he had ever performed with. Jimmi was a left handed guitarist. But as a young, non-performer, he did not have very much money. Lefty guitars were tough to find and more expensive than righty guitars since they were so rare. Jimmi decided to go ahead and buy the righty guitar and he switched the strings so that the only difference was that the guitar was flipped. The strings were the same as when a righty played it because he flipped those and the strap was also flipped so that he could stand and play.
