It depends on the Sperry's . Most leathers have had the leathers waterproofed in the factory but don't be confused, these shoes (for the most part) are not waterproof. The ideas is the leather can stand up to wet conditions but do not necessarily keep the water out. Be sure to see a waterproof label on the shoe if you want water to stay out of the shoe while walking in the rain.

I was very upset about my gorgeous leather boots ending up with a solid drop of diesel on them. The corn starch removed it brilliantly. I couldn't get the friction strong enough to get warm, so I just rubbed the spot thouroughly and solidly about 5 times for about a minute each time, using clean corn starch each time and brushing the starch off with a soft clean dry brush between each time.

Aniline style leathers are very absorbent and once stains have been absorbed by the leather they are often impossible to remove successfully.

Treating leather with a protector (such as LTT Ultra Protect) will allow the saliva to sit on the surface rather than be soaked in and then it can be cleaned off.

Lazy Leather is a unique aniline cleaner which is a non surfactant and will not be soaked up by the leather. It is a great maintenance product for aniline style leathers.

Yes leather is porous and water (moisture) is good for leather and is what keeps it in good condition.

Leather has to 'breathe'. This means that the leather naturally transpires which allows the movement of moisture back and forth through the leather.

All finshes and finishing processes that are used (including repair processes) have to use specific products that allow this movement of moisture to take place.

You can try saddle soap, available wherever shoe polish is sold, or perhaps a commercial leather cleaner, often available in furniture stores.
