Are there french horn solos in Les Miserables?

I'm speaking from the school version, which I played last March. I have no idea about the real version.

There are a few spots where it is written "solo" but only for a measure. There's nothing really huge in those. In the song titled "Sewers" we decided to have only one player in the opening because it was so exposed. In "ABC Cafe" (I believe; I apologize for not being sure) there are some really exposed gorgeous phrases that (I believe) only the first part has.

Overall, there's nothing huge like the English Horn solo during the Prologue.

Young Cosette

The image is taken from an engraving that, I think, was made for the book. (It at least shows up a lot in the pre-musical book talk that circles around the internet.) At any rate, it's been associated with the story for a while.

Why is it fitting that gavroche dies in Les Miserables?

I think to answer this question would be to answer the question "Why is it fitting that joy be extinguished?" I think that's about what Gavroche symbolizes, he has so much of it in spite of his circumstances, in such contrast with the other 'miserables.' But I think his death underscores the extent to which the society as it was in its unfairness was destroying truly good things. And according to Hugo in his first description of Gavroche, society was bound to get him in the end; either he would starve, or become a criminal and lose his soul, or something else would happen either to kill him or to change him. There might be other reasons too, of course.

How does jean valjean die in Les Miserables?

He dies of old age. He has lived an extremely long life, taking care of his own family, then spending 19 years in prison, then spending a long time recreating himself in Montreuil-sur-Mer, then raising Cosette. In the book, at Marius's and Cosette's wedding, Valjean finally comes clean about his past. Marius is horrified and steers Cosette away from Valjean. When this occurs, Valjean loses the will to live and takes to his bed. It is only when Marius discovers that Valjean saved his life that he realizes that Valjean is truly a great man. Marius and Cosette rush to Valjean's bedside only to find him weak and dying.

When he does die, Fantine and Eponine take him away to heaven as angels. So the ending is uplifting because he has led a full, honorable life.
