I can only speak for Australia but basically they are one in the same. Pool Attendant is often the official title -- especially in job ads. However, due to the confusion it may cause, the term Lifeguard is more widely accepted and used.

Many people would think of a pool attendant as being someone who hands out towels and rubs sunscreen on people. A Lifeguard works at a public swimming pool and is fully qualified to perform CPR and administer first aid.

I always think of a pool attendant as being like a "cabana boy" that works at a country club or something!

As a lifeguard some of the disadvantages i have experienced are: -rude customers who think they know best -long, hot work hours -early starts, late nights -when working outside - SUNBURN! -continuous training assesments -flipflop marks -continuous, never ending cleaning ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Normally, customers will act rude only because they are older than you, and believe they don't have to listen to some snot-nosed kid. If they give this lip, tell them: "Sir/Ma'am, I'm afraid you will have to follow our facility's regulations if you wish to remain here at our facility. If you refuse to follow our regulations, and you refuse to leave the facility, the facility will be required to file criminal trespassing charges against you and any other involved parties." That will usually get them to shut-up and go about their ways. But be sure to follow through on your promise if they refuse to follow your orders. If they refuse to follow your mandates, contact your manager and have them call 9-1-1 and report an act of criminal trespassing at the facility. I work at a large municipal pool where there is normally a police officer on-duty. If the situation becomes hostile, get down from your stand and walk towards a fellow guard and then to your manager's location with the fellow guard by your side the whole time. Over the years, I've noticed that the best way to avoid an argument with a patron is to take off your sunglasses before ever speaking with them. This will help A LOT. The patron can better discern your emotions, and there will be less miscommunication between the two of you. Making eye contact with the individual lets them know that you are diverting all of your attention to them and their concerns, and that you are trying to formulate an adequate response to their situation. Try it, it really does work!!

a lifeguard firstly saves your life if it is in danger, they are expertly trained first aiders, CPR and all type of rescue techniques. they are there as a counter measure to reduce the likelihood of a hazard occurring. and without them many people would die, or be seriously injured- fact. think about a pool where someones drowning, or has just fractured their spine, without lifeguards no one would know what to do, and if they had a slight idea in their heads, they would very most likely cause further injury to the person or death most likely.

The answer you are looking for may or may not be answered by OSHA regulations. Check into your state's department of health and human services first. It is most likely that OSHA will stipulate a minimum requirement while the state in which you reside may set the bar a little bit higher. I work at a pool in Illinois, and I believe the maximum amount of time a lifeguard can do outdoor lifeguarding between breaks is 3 hours, with at least a 15-minute break in between. My employer usually keeps it around 2 hours on/ 30-minutes off.

Oakleys or some other type of sunglasses, Vibram FiveFingers or aka Shoe Gloves, Rashguard or a nice Watch/Diving Watch, it's nice knowing what time of day it is when you're looking at water all day or it would be real useful when you need to do audits.
