The Black-backed Magpie is found over the rest of Australia except for the far north of NT & Qld. Through interbreeding there are a couple of other races in Australia which have different amounts of white or black feathers on their backs. All magpies have glossy black and white feathers, however the feathers on the back of a female are usually mottled grey. Magpies have black feathers on the top of the head, under their chin and body and at the tip of the tail. They have a white patch on the top of their neck and on their tail. Their wings are black except for a white band on the leading edge. The immature ones look like their mothers. Magpies have an orange-brown eye, the stout bill is bluish white with a black tip. The legs are also black.
