This is a long process, I will give you a short answer here though.

First, you need to live in a state that allows the use of medicinal marijuana. You also need to be diagnosed by a doctor with a disease that would warrant the use of medical marijuana. After you have done this the doctor will decide if this treatment is best for you and finally prescribe it if they decide it is necessary. I believe that in most states where the use is allowed that there are certain places you need to go, and generally they will give you an id card saying you are allowed to posses the marijuana for medical reasons along with you marijuana.

It is used for only people who have medical marijuana cards. The marijuana is grown commercially. This drug can be prescribed by a doctor legally. You can smoke it legally then because it is medical marijuana. But only if your doctor prescribes it.

The way the law states right now, you can legally have medical marijuana in Arizona as long as you have a prescription from a doctor. But, under federal law it's illegal for a doctor to prescribe marijuana. So you're kind of covered, kinda not.

The best solution is to talk to your local government and get them to change the wording in the law from "prescribe" to "recommend" like we have here in California.

But basically, you can only possess a certain amount of marijuana at any time, and you can grow up to however many plants for your own personal use. Well let's do the math, generally it's something like 6 to 20 strains at a time when in a dispensary. Each of which cost an average of 20 dollars a gram, and 60 dollars an 8th.

If each plant harvested produces something around 450 grams of bud (not counting leaves and stems which can be used to make hash, tinctures, balms, edibles, or simply sell for people to make their own products from). If you have something like 6 plants per strain carried, lets say 10 strains, that's 60 plants each of which with about 450 grams of bud.

450 grams times 60 plants equals 27,000. Now let's say you sell it only by the gram at 20 each, that would be 540,000 dollars made in that time.

If you live in California, about 30% of this would go back to taxes, then employees, your utility bills (water, electricity, etc), security, etc. So in the end, you may end up with something like half to a third of what you made, and apart from your salary, that must be generally distributed back into the business.
