Is melatonin a mood stabilizer?
Melatonin is a naturally occurring "sleep regulating" hormone in your body. As such, it is not really a mood stabilizer as over the counter medications are. But since it helps regulate sleep, and since sleep is critical to overall mood, it does play a part in how our mood is if we do not get enough restful sleep.
It can be bought over the counter in various milligram dosages without a prescription; and it is often the first thing that some practitioners will suggest if there are sleep deprivation issues present. Since it is already present in the body, one is merely replacing something rather than adding a foreign substance. Therefore there is relatively little risk to the person.
Stress, and long periods of sleep deprivation can deplete the stores of melatonin in the body making sleep onset and duration difficult. Adding melatonin back can assist with both. Generally, the first suggested dose is 1-3mg per night; but there is also a 5mg extended release dose, as well. There do not seem to be any contraindications in my experience with most psychiatric medications, and indeed, melatonin is a first line additive when sleep issues are present prior to adding any prescription sleep aid.
What drugs does melatonin interact with?
Melatonin should not be taken by people using certain antidepressants, such as Prozac (a serotonin inhibitor) or Nardil (a monoamine oxidase inhibitor).
there is no limit, it is a natiral substance , well the 'safe' limit is actually 40mg but ...that them being ultra safe .. you may experience very vivid dreams , sometimes hallucinations. its cant kill you.
When did Melatonin first become available on the market?
Melatonin became available on the market in 1994, 36 years after it was discovered in 1958 by Aaron B. Lerner.
What is the difference between bio melatonin and melatonin?

Does a melatonin lozenge work if you swallow before it dissolves?
Yes it will dissolve inside you anyway.
You'll probably turn gay
I've been taking Melatonin for several years and I've been chewing them (3mg tablets) instead of swallowing them for the last year or so and they seem to work just as well as when I swallow them. They taste similar to aspirin, which I actually like to chew as well. I know. I'm weird. At least I'm getting my beauty sleep. : )
No, but, like most sleep aids, if you use it consistently to help you sleep, you can suffer sleep disturbances if you don't have it. It's best to use it only occasionally, or not at all.
Does melatonin lower testosterone?
I have been on 5mg's of melatonin for five yeas now as an anti-age holistic. My sex life is the same as before taking it, no difference.
Melatonin is routinely taken by cancer patients at a rate of up to 80mg's (per day) an hour before bedtime, so an overdose would be difficult. We're talking bottles of it to even begin to cause a problem.... And experimental (unpublished) studies show that AIDS & cancer patients are taking 100's of MG's per day, but this is a strictly 'under a doctor's care' situation (not only would it be a prescription situation at that point but the patient is in a hospital bed).
At age 55, I take 20mg's per day an hour before bedtime, and see no side-effects at all, except for a few wild dreams (because the brain is more relaxed). There are studies done on mice that increased their life span by 25% by adding melatonin to their water bottles, and it was saturated in some mice to an equivalent of a human swallowing a melatonin pill the size of a house brick, and doing fine, so if you're into suicide, there are better ways.
In fact, I realize that the original question was probably a joke, because suidcial teens are given melatonin to lessen depression (they also get more sleep by taking it, as do colicky babies to get more sleep [usually at a rate of 0.3mg, but see a pediatrician first] which may reduce SIDS, plus not putting a fan directly on a sleeping infant as this triggers a gasping-to-exhaustion situation, putting them in stress and they later dream of when they were back in the womb when they did not breath [they autonomic system reverts back and they stop breathing]).
So if you are thinking of taking enough melatonin to kill yourself because you are depressed, you would not be able to do it, and in fact the joke would be on you because you would feel better than ever after taking it for a while, because by increasing the percentage of melatonin in your blood you would no longer want to kill yourself. Oops, try something else.
Colicky babies, depressed children, and ADAH situations can have a lower-than-normal producing pineal gland (which produces melatonin), so simply taking melatonin can raise the level and bring back an infant (from crying so much), wild child, teen, or ADAH situation without harmful 'drug the kid into a comma' type pills.

Can you take Benadryl and melatonin together?
The best response would be call your doctor .
Both medication are absorbed into the cardiovascular system ,Both are strong and toxic.
Taking a 25mg antihistamine to counter act with allergic reaction due to "sulfa_"TMP is safe under one condition, What is the direction of your medication.
Taking benadryl more then 2 to 3 times a day in a 24 hour period Is Toxic to the liver ,Which act like the central station to metabolize and synthesizes chemicals.
If you have sever allergic reaction that do not go away from a 25mg antihistamine"benadryl" within a 2 day period, seek medical help immediately And stop taking the medication.
Do Not take Tylenol/ Pm to counteract with allergic reaction, Tylenol Pm is Contains more toxin that affect the liver then benadryl and should only be taken as a Last resort for sever Muscle pains.
Benadryl 25mg- 50mg is a better option to take to counteract allergic reactions then NSAIDS; basically you choose between which one harms the body less.
The best thing to do is to take one benadryl to stop the allergic reaction and discountinue the medication unless your doctor states otherwise.
Biography-
"sulfa-"TMP, is interesting antibiotic that both add a chemical TRIMETHOPRIM to your body that create a toxic environment for bacterium spore to prevent reproduction but adds to the outer cell wall of white blood cells allowing white blood cell to eat away the infection easier.
Typical antibiotics like amoxicillin act like an alternative steroid to white blood cells without chemical synthesizing which is why allergic reaction to the amoxicillin family are low and toxicity to the body is low.
bacteria can become resistant to the "cillin" family which is why taking the same antibiotic for a long period of time is avoided or changed.
"sulfa-"TMP, This antibiotic is a good choice for bacteria That become resistant to other antibiotic . It will kill off any type of infection through out the entire body making your body a toxic environment to bacteria , not Viruses.
Because of the chemical trimethoprine added to the body, can result to an allergic reaction which is why "sulfa-"TMP reaction are high.
Bendryl affect the histamine, a chemical used by the body to act like a natural steroid for white blood cells; Histamine is responsible for inflammation, swelling est.
The Body can over produce to much histmine and get out of control which causes allergic reaction so benadryl acts like a weight to reduce the amount, however the chemical in bendryl to counteract the natural chemical in the body is toxic to the liver.

Can melatonin be taken with aloe vera juice?
Dear
All of these Melatonin and Aloe Vera have been claimed to have a strong anti-oxidative properties and other additional activities not yet scientifically studied. It clearly appears useless to every one to use things that have similar effect. Beside this, why do you need to take them? If you have a reason, this is not scientifically supported, be careful and consult your physician. If you need more details email me (ndufredfr@yahoo.fr).

Can melatonin cause breathing problems?
My son who is seven has been on Melatonin for about 2 months. Since being on Melatonin he has gained weight and he has major breathing difficulty, especially at night when he lies down. We have been to ER thinking is was his asthma and it all seemed fined, we have had a ENT take an xray in case his adenoids where swollen, and they too where fine. I have been so concerned about his condition and was willing to go to any specialist to find out what is going on. I have read on the side effects of Melatonin and a couple are shortness of breath, pain in chest (which he is definitely getting) and headaches. I have had him off it for three nights and I just hope he gets better soon. Has anyone got any stories that relate??

Would 300 mcg of melatonin have an adverse reaction with 5 mg of abilify?
Abilify is one of only six atypical antipsychoticsapproved by the FDA. While testing is apparently complete, this is an unusual and extremely powerful drug, with a wide range of side effects. Melatonin is the only hormone secreted into the bloodstream by the pineal gland and the fact is we don't know everything it does. If you're getting this in a holositic meds store, this means that the tight controls placed by the FDA on pharmaceuticals are lifted to some extent, so you don't exactly know what you're getting. And in fact, I'm not sure why you want to take melatonin right now, so it's hard to comment on the efficacy of your approach. While I can't find a documented interaction between these two meds, I wouldn't consider mixing them myself. I would advise you to give this a pass. If I can't convince you of that, at least discuss this with your doctor before proceding.
What would happen if you Chewed a melatonin 3mg dietery suppliment?
You should never chew any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, unless told to by a physician. Melatonin is not simply a "dietary supplement"; it contains ingredients that can affect the body in ways that prescribed medications can affect the body.
It's important to understand that ALL meds including herbal remedies use parts and extracts of plants-- this is true for prescription meds also. Herbal remedies are not studied by the FDA, though, and all of the potential effects are not known.
Chewing a tablet (prescription or over the counter or herbal) makes the dose enter the bloodstream much faster than the manufacturer intended. While some meds may only make you nauseated or sleep longer or faster, other meds could create a bleeding stomach ulcer, could slow respirations to dangerous lows, could make a person so sedated they wouldn't awaken during vomiting (leading to aspiration pneumonia or death), or -- the med's fast release could lead to death.
Is 300mcg of melatonin too much for a three year old?
No, It isn't. We have a friend whose doctor recommended 1mg which is a little more than 3-times that amount. Good luck. You should probably consult your pediatrician first though.
