Can you give your dog aspirin?

No - aspirin (and all other human pain medications like Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, acetominophen, etc.) are toxic to dogs. They are very sensitive to the side effects and can develop a fatal stomach ulcer from the drug after even a single pill. Every year a number of veterinarians watch a dog die because the owner gave the dog aspirin to treat some sort of pain.

If you believe your dog would benefit from pain medication, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian. There are safe and relatively cheap medications that your veterinarian can prescribe for him.

Who invented acetaminophen?

For many years it was believed that Felix Hoffman, Jr., a chemist working for the Bayer Laboratories in Germany first synthesized the compound that would be known as aspirin. But documents found in the Bayer archives several years later showed the actual discovery was made by Arthur Eichengruen, Hoffman's supervisor. Eichengruen showed the efficacy of the drug by testing it on himself and later on others. But, Eichengruen's name was removed from all records in the early 1930's as the Nazi party came to power in Germany because Eichengruen was a Jew. Not wanting to jeopardize his position, Eichengruen remained quiet as Hoffman received praise. Several years after being freed from a Nazi concentration camp at age 78, he wrote an impassioned article in an international pharmaceutical journal stating his claim as the person who discovered aspirin.

Can you take aspirin with Ibuprofen?

In low dosages, yes it is safe. There are restrictions on who can take these drugs and when/with what other medications, but that is a whole different topic altogether. A

The combination of a salicylate (aspirin) and ibuprofen (which are both NSAIDs) may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. It is advised to not take these two medications together at the same time, especially in high doses. If both medications are needed / required; Ibuprofen should be administered 30-120 minutes after, or at least 8 hours before, aspirin. It is also advised to talk to your doctor when combining these two drugs.

Also, aspirin and ibuprofen cancel out each others effects and shouldn't be taken together.

-Aspirin is taken to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Like ibuprofen it also relieves fever, pain and inflammation.

-Ibuprofen is taken to relive pain, fever and inflammation with less effect on platelets

According to the Mayo Clinic (related link) taking ibuprofen greatly reduces the benefits of daily aspirin therapy.

The best advice is almost always TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.

If the use of both drugs is unavoidable, use aspirin first, then wait for 4 hours before using ibuprofen.

Answer:

You shouldn't be mixing aspirin with anything, or mixing ibuprofin with anything.

Aspirin has been known to cause Reys Syndrome in children under 19.

Follow the dosages on the box with the aspirin or the ibuprofin.

I don't recommend taking both together, unless specifically told so by a doctor.

Ibuprofin can cause stomach bleeding in large doses, so choose wisely.

Use of aspirin with other pain relievers (such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, ketoprofen or prescription pain relievers) is not recommended, unless directed by your doctor.

Blood

Does aspirin thin blood and if so how?

Aspirin is called a "blood thinner" but it does not "thin" the blood: it makes the clotting time of the blood longer but there is no actual "thinning" involved. Platelets are small particles in the blood that cause blood clots to form. Aspirin prevents the platelets from forming blood clots. Therefore, aspirin can increase bleeding by preventing blood from clotting though it also can be used therapeutically to prevent clots from causing heart attacks and strokes.

What are the differences between ibuprofen acetaminophen naproxen and aspirin?

NSAIDs and acetaminophenIbuprofen, naproxen and aspirin are all NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.) Among other actions their main mechanism of action is to block a group of enzymes called COX (cyclo-oxygenase) enzymes. They reduce pain (analgesic), reduce high temperatures (antipyrexial), reduce swelling (anti-inflammatory) and make the blood less likely to clot (antithrombolic). As they're all in the same group, they all have similar side effects and risks, however the severity of each side effect varies across the drugs, for instance naproxen is less likely to cause heart problems than ibuprofen. Common side effects include gastric irritation (the reason they should be taken with food) and bleeding. Other drugs in this group include diclofenac and the coxibs (however these have more specific action).

Acetaminophen (paracetamol), is not an NSAID and acts via different mechanisms. It shares the analgesic and antipyretic properties of the NSAIDs, but in not anti-inflammatory or antithrombolic. It is broken down in the body by the liver, unlike NSAIDS which are removed via the kidneys, and have very different side effects.

Acetaminophen can be taken with an NSAID, however you should not take more than one NSAID at a time.

Can you use salicylic acid when pregnant?

It is not safe to use any medications either prescribed or over the counter without approval of your healthcare provider.

My doctor approved only Tylenol for pain and Dramamine for nausea. Aspirin or aspirin-containing medicines are never acceptable in pregnancy.

Salicylic Acid is NOT aspirin. Aspirin is "acetyl salicylic acid" or ASA. Salicylic acid is commonly an ingredient in topical acne solutions, dandruff control products and wart remover. Check with your doctor before using salicylic acid during pregnancy or nursing.

My doctor reccomended using salicylic acid as a replacement for my prescription acne medication. He said that both the face/body washes and the topical treatments are perfecly safe, and so far they have worked wonderfully!

Funny, my doctor told me NOT to use salyclic acid while pregnant. Also not to use anything with benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid. Basically for my pregnancy related acne I was told to leave it untreated until I was at least in my third trimester - and not use a topical or oral medication for it.

My doctor told me that many OB/GYNs are divided on this issue. Some say it's not harmful at all (she was in this category), others do not recommend it. The truth is, there have not been sufficient tests to determine if there is a harmful effect on babies in the womb when his/her mother uses salicylic acid topical treatment. Other prescription acne medications are definitely a no-no -- but concerning salicylic acid, follow your doctor's recommendations and be at ease about it. If you can go without a treatment, that would be best, but if you need something, talk to your doctor about it.

Can Humphrey 11 pills cause miscarriages?

Humphrey 11 does not induce abortion/miscarriage. What it does is making the cervix soft. That is how it's used to get your period back. When having a medical abortion with RU486 you first are given a pill to loosen the fetus from the uterus wall. Then the next day you get one to start the cramps so the fetus come out. So to use Humphrey it can not be used after the embryo is already attached to the wall. You can get hurt and so can the fetus be if you use it too late. And with hurting the fetus I mean causing damage without aborting. If I'm not mistaken that is illegal. Also it is a very uncertain method that can not be recommended. To get a safe abortion you need to go to a clinic and have it safely done by medical professionals.

Can you give a cat a human allergy pill?

No. Never give human medication to a cat, as you can easily overdose it. Cats are much much smaller in size compared to humans, so even giving a cat a tiny bit of pill could have disastrous consequences. If you believe your cat is ill, it is advisable to take it to the vet where they can prescribe the correct medicine.

Can you take aspirin with atenolol?

There is no interactions between the two medications. It is common practice to include a low-dose aspirin (81mg) with atenolol since a person who is taking atenolol usually has some cardiovascular issues. But before starting any new medications, talk with your doctor and/or pharmacist. These medications can interact with other medications/supplements/herbs you may be taking.
