The soda is packed with loads of bubbles that want to get out of the liquid. To do so they need to form bubbles around something like a spec of dirt or a tiny dent in the bottle. That's why you see bubbles forming from the same places in glasses of soda.

A mentos has a very rough surface (on a microscopic scale) so when you put it in all the millions of bubbles suddenly form on the mint creating loads of gas which has to go somewhere. So it blasts out the top of the drinks bottle. It works with any rough surfaced material like chalk, not just mentos.

Mentos fizz because of the nucleation sites on the surface of the Mentos. These are basically microscopic holes and when it comes into contact with the coke all of the dissolved carbon dioxide condenses and form bubbles that wear away layers of the mentos where more nucleation sites are accessible by the carbon dioxide. This is why the reaction is not repeatable with the same coke or a flat coke.

I tried Coffee with Mentos, the Coffee becomes a little minty. No reactions similar to Coke and Mentos, but personally I didn't like the after taste of the combination.

Maybe a foot. Sodas don't have fins and they have no balance, so they'll go up a little ways, flop over, go back to earth and shoot off horizontally.

As to how far it'll go horizontally, it depends on how full the soda was, how large the bottle was and how many Mentos you put in.

Because at a microscopic level, the shell of Mentos is very uneven, and the carbonated bubbles in the soda are immediately attracted to them. This results in a disruption of the surface tension of the soda, which causes all the carbon dioxide to escape the liquid at once. For a better explanation, see the Related Link below.

The way that this works is that when the mentos enter the soda they sink to the bottom and starts the reaction. The reaction has started when the bubbles start reaching the top and they can't mix with oxygen.

Basically, you are witnessing the Surface Effect. Carbon Dioxide forms bubbles. Diet Coke has more carbon dioxide than other regular sodas. The surface of the "mento" is jagged and filled with nooks and crannies. The Carbon Dioxide finds all of these holes and fills them with bubbles. Since the Mentos are heavy, they drop to the bottom of the bottle, forming bubbles all the way down. This is what causes the fast and furious explosion out of the top of the Diet Coke bottle.

The Coke and Mentos experiment is a physical reaction and not a chemical one because the chemical compounds involved are not changed. No "chemistry" happens, but only "physics" occurs. Let's look. Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is dissolved in the Coke, and when the cap is removed, it begins to come out of solution and form bubbles. There is a complex issue regarding exactly where a bubble will form and how it will grow, but bubbles do form and grow. Dump in some Mentos and the surface of each of the Mentos provides a "zillion" sites for bubbles to form. They form quickly, then detach, and more bubbles quickly form. This results in a cascade of bubble formation and the dramatic result we see. And it's all about the CO2 coming out of solution and making bubbles rapidly. Those bubbles carry Coke with them to the top of the bottle as they make their way out, and we see the fountain form. The Mentos and Coke are unchanged, just as the CO2 is unchanged in this physicalreaction.

You need at least 1. And, it depends what kind of pop you are using. Diet coke produces the best results because it has the most Carbon Dioxide gas in it, and that means that the rough surface and the pores on the Mentos candies will get filled up with the Diet Coke carbon dioxide gas. Right after Diet Coke comes Pepsi, and on and on.

Because the normal soda that does react has a larger ammount of carbonation in it.

Sugar, wheat glucose syrup, hydrogenated coconut oil, citric acid, rice starch, gum arabic, gellan gum, sucrose esters of fatty acids, natural and artificial flavors, colors (beta-carotene, beetroot, red), carnauba wax, & beeswax.

Diet coke because it has the most chemicals and bad stuff in it along with coke.
