Most people believe that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, both from the 1953 British expedition, were the first to scale Mount Everest. However, it is possible that the peak was climbed first almost 30 years before by George Mallory and Sandy Irvine of the 1924 British expedition.
