Mountains

The observatories are located in mountains and highlands because those are the highest points on Earth. Scientists can see celestial objects more in focus when the telescopes are closer to the objects, in this case, higher up in elevation.

A dome mountain is formed through the uplift of rock layers in a circular or dome-like shape due to tectonic forces, such as the uplifting of underlying magma or the compression of rock layers. Over time, erosion can expose the hardened rock core of the dome, creating a distinctive feature in the landscape.

The Virunga Mountains are located in East Africa, straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This volcanic mountain range is known for its lush forests and being home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas.

Mars has the highest mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons. It is a massive shield volcano that towers about 13.6 miles (22 km) high, making it three times taller than Mount Everest on Earth.
