Itachi uchiha was one of the most powerful members of the uchiha clan. Itachi was ordered to wipe out his own clan and leave the village as a criminal. Itachi accepted it just for the sake of his village. But there was one thing he could not do that was to kill his innocent brother he later requested the hokage not to harm his brother. Then he left the village and later joined the akatsuki just to collect information about their plans.He wished to die by sasuke's hands and till that day he tried to survive inspite being very ill. When itachi and sasuke fought itachi died by his own will and when he was about to die he transferred all of his powers to sasuke by poking on his head.

Neither really... He technically LEAVES the village. that is not considered betrayal. Then he helps the village by killing (SPOILER!!) Orochimaru and Itachi. So he helped the village again. Then he finds out that his brother was good so he goes after the leaf. He is now neither because in some eyes what he is doing may be bad and evil but when you think about it, the hokage made Itachi kill his clan and Itachi was a good person and didn't kill his brother because he loved him then he tells Sasuke to find him one day and fight him so his brother could be a hero... So it was the village's fault that Sasuke left in the first place. Because he wanted to get stronger to kill his brother for revenge.
