When Kirsti and Annemarie's mother came home from shoe shopping for Kirsti, Kirsti was very angry with the purchase. Kirsti's new shoes were made of fish scales because the shortage of leather during the war. When Ellen, who happen to be at the Johansen's apartment, saw how mad Kirsti was, had the idea to dye the "ugly" green fish shoes black with Mr. Rosen's black ink. This satisfied Kirsti now that her shoes were no longer green, and the problem was resolved.

Ellen survived in "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry by posing as the Johansens' daughter, Lisa, and hiding in their home. The Johansens risked their lives to protect Ellen from the Nazis by keeping her safe and supporting her throughout the dangerous situation in Denmark during World War II.

Peter Nielson, Lise's fiance and Lise herself. Lise gets ran over by a Nazi car because they are chasing after her. She and Peter are both part of the Resistance which is against the Nazis. Peter gets executed by the Nazi. They find out he is helping the Jewish people of Denmark and shoot him.

Peter decides to at night, send them to the dock, and ships them to Sweden in the morning
