The Royal palm is native to the Everglades of south Florida. Royal Palms are found planted through out the Middle East, where summer temperatures can reach 55 degree C and humidity levels up to 95% - although many of them suffer from fungal infections in these circumstances if the stem is damaged in any way. Lower temperature range I can't help with, except to say that they are able to tolerate temperatures down to about 13 or 14 degrees C

Why does northern California have palm trees?

Low elevations in Northern California do have palm trees. Mainly snowless/ frostless areas but in inland areas that are prone to occasional winter frosts, some of the more tender ones will not grow well. Most of the popular varieties of palms, however, are ones that are hardy to the climate, and which are mostly the same as you see in SoCal. This is because they are fast growing and abundant. There are some palm growing farms in the Central Valley too.

Grafting palm tree?

Generally speaking, monocots (such as palm) can not be grafted since the vascular cambium is distributed in discrete bundles throughout the stem instead of on the outer ring like dicots (such as apple tree)---so you can't "line up the plumbing" and the plant can't get nutrients across the graft so it dies :(

Fact of palm trees?

BY RICARDO HERRERA

Palm Trees can grow up to 100 feet. Palm trees, with their distinctive slender trunks and bursts of fronds, evoke thoughts of tropical beaches, but there are over 2,500 species of palm trees with a variety of different characteristics and interesting facts. The taxonomical name for the palm family is Arecaceae. They all thrive best in warm climates. Some are toweringly tall and others are small enough to grow in a pot.

Palm trees have been useful to humans throughout history. They are mentioned multiple times in both the Bible and the Koran. Jesus was greeted with the honor of laying palms in front of him as he entered Jerusalem, giving us the holy day of Palm Sunday. The palm in this instance symbolized victory. Trees like the coconut palm and the date palm have been favored for their tasty fruit, for instance. The jelly palm of Brazil yields a fruit that tastes similar to apricots.

Not all palm trees are "trees," and not all plants called "palms" are truly palms.Lots of staples come from palm trees. Coconuts are an obvious product of palm trees, but did you know that dates, betel nuts and acai fruit all come from palm trees as well? Palm oil, as its name indicates, also comes from the fruit of the oil palm tree. The tallest palm tree can grow up to 197 feet tall!

Can a palm tree be sprayed with water during freezing temperatures?

Yes, a palm can be sprayed -- under certain conditions -- with water during freezing temperatures.

Specifically, the trees in question (Arecaceae family) are susceptible to tissue damage and dehydration during freezes and frosts. The palm caregiver can spray the plant with anti-transpirants and copper fungicides -- as well as water the soil -- before predicted freezes and frosts. During freezes and frosts, it is helpful to run sprinklers -- non-stop between sunset and sunrise -- since moving water does not freeze and the moisture will keep the plant well-hydrated and prevent the damage from tissues drying up, freezing and thawing.
