It was written as a concept album on how people end up going insane and what leads up to insanity. It was roughly inspired by the original lead singer Syd Barrett who left the band shortly after the release of their first album due to mental illness, he had mental problems mixed with heavy LSD and other drug usage which led him to eventually lose his mind and excommunicate himself from the world. Alot of Pink Floyd albums are about insanity, mostly attributed to Barrett's mental instability.

The album Animals by Pinf Floyd was clearly inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm.

Animal Farm is a representation of the russian revolution, while Animals is a representation of the capitalistic model in general, so each animal doesn't exactly play the same role

However, there is a big connection:

In Orwell's Animal Farm, the pigs are the leaders, the men in power, the ones opressing the masses. The sheep are the masses in general, the proletariat. In the book, the dogs represent the military, the police.

In Pink Floyd Animals discourse, there are three main songs: Dogs, Pigs and Sheep. Dogs in this case is not about the military. It is more of a dialog between the older members of the bourgouise and the younger ones. The older one is talking about how to be a capitalistic dog and the younger one is complaining about the system and hints an idea of going against it.

Pigs is a description of how ridicule the high class is, and Sheep is a description of how the proletariat thinks.

So, there is a big connection, call it inspiration.

Every member of the band, other than Nick Mason (drums), contributed songs to the Pink Floyd music catalogue, with Roger Waters and David Gilmour writing the most. However, some songs (such as 'Echoes') are attributed to the full band, as they were true collaborations (as opposed to one member writing a song then presenting it to the band).

None. Can't you tell from hearing him play bass? ;-) but seriously, he does have some education in architecture, but he (along with his other bandmates) abandoned formal education when their music career started taking off.

At the time, the Floyd were not a world-famous band; they were mainly popular in their local circles in Cambridge at first. They were mainly an experimental jam-oriented band at first, but had a few 'hits' that were more traditional songs - 'Arnold Layne' and 'See Emily Play' are two notable examples.

Musician Bob Geldof played the main character, "Pink". The character was essentially a metaphor for bassist/lyricist-turned-band-dictator Roger Waters, specifically his feelings toward losing his father as an infant, his antipathy towards the British education system, and his feelings of isolation as the band became world-famous.

Whew that's a tough one! It's tough to say because there was a time where prog rock bands ruled the rock world - for instance, when Yes released the monolothic "Tales from Topographic Oceans", a double album conatining four ~20-minute songs, not only did it sell well, it debuted at #1 on the US Billboard charts! That's the opposite of underrated, really. If we're looking at today's prog rock bands, well, it depends. There's bands like Dream Theater that are essentially prog-metal and have a sizable following from fans of both genres. But then there's bands like the Flower Kings and the Dixie Dregs that have a loyal fanbase, but do not get a lot of recognition. Which IMO is a shame because there's a lot of great music out there that's getting passed over.
