The Leadbeaters possum is found only in Victoria, Australia. It lives almost exclusively in the central highlands of the state, within the tall ash forests above an elevation of 700m. They inhabit hollows in Mountain Ash, Alpine Ash and Shining Gum trees which are usually in excess of 150 years old.

White possums are not common, but albino possums do occur from time to time. Possums (which are different to opossums) vary in colour from white (very rare) to grey and shades of brown. The cuscus, which is in the possum family, can be white.

Opossums and raccoons are NOT primarily found in cemeteries. In most small cities and rural areas in most US States, opossums and raccoons are frequent backyard visitors, along with deer and bears, especially if homeowners leave bird feeders, nuts, or uncovered garbage containers. True possums, those that live in Australia and New Zealand, begin their mating season towards the end of winter. Possums are not the same as opossums.

Brushtail possums will eat any fruit that is available, but they have a preference for sweeter, easily accessed fruits, such as stone fruits, bananas and mangoes. For example, they are not interested in citrus, and melons prove too difficult for them to get into.

Is it harmful for my pet opossum to eat part of a marijuana bud?

It depends on whether the creature in question is a true possum, or an opossum, which is quite different.

True possums are native to Australia (and introduced to New Zealand), and they are entirely unrelated to opossums, except that both creatures are marsupials. The only disease a person or a pet is likely to get if bitten by a possum is tetanus from an untreated wound. Possums can also transmit ticks and fleas to household pets. There are no incidences of the rabies virus in either Australia or New Zealand.

In North America, however, it is a different situation. The body temperature of an opossum is generally too low to harbour the virus: it is possible, although highly unlikely, for an opossum to carry the rabies virus. However, there is at least one documented case of a rabid opossum biting a child, so it can be presumed that in very unusual situations, opossums might carry rabies.

Probably because he has a bad ear infection , the tissue inside it started to die, and a fly laid her eggs on it. Brushtailed possums are common in both rural and suburban areas. In their natural wild habitat, predators are eagles, hawks, owls and quolls. Foxes, which have been introduced to Australia, are also predators of Brushtailed possums. In suburban areas, possums are commonly chased and killed by domestic dogs.

There are no possums in the US.

True possums are marsupials native to Australia (with some varieties found also in New Guinea and the Indonesian island of Sulawesi). Possums are quite different to American opossums. However, whether possums or opossums, the females of the species do have a pouch for raising their young.
