Producers (food chain)

This category covers questions about producers, organisms that obtain energy by making complex organic compounds by utilizing inorganic molecules from light energy (photosynthesis) or inorganic chemical reactions (chemosynthesis). Producers are formally known as autotrophs.

What are examples of how the food chain can be broken between producer and consumer or predator and prey?

One way a food chain can become "broken" is when humans disrupt the food chain.

For example, in Yellowstone Park and nearby States, humans had killed off wolves in the area. Scientists noted how big game populations of deer and elk started increasing. After many decades, scientists noted that the increased big game ate most of the foliage, which changed the forests and soil. Trees started to die. Without trees and foliage, Yellowstone had more erosion especially near rivers. Rivers reacted to the higher soil quantities of runoff deposited into the water. Waters became more stagnant and flowed less vigorously.

Eventually, scientists decided to reintroduce wolves into the ecosystem. Wolves mated, had babies, thus increasing their population. Scientists added more wolves to prevent cycles of in-breeding genes. The wolves began to kill big game, lessening the ill and elderly populations of elk and deer. Foliage began to grow again. Wolves added nutrients to the soil from the wolves' wastes. New sapling trees started to grow again. But most interesting...the re-introduction of wolves changed the river! With more trees and foliage, there was less erosion. With less erosion, the rivers became less stagnant. The rivers began to flow faster and because the water erodes rocks, the river narrowed back into its original bed (rather than expanding when it was stagnant).

Really cool information to know!

Is a bear a primary producer?

No, a bear is not a primary producer. Primary producers, such as plants and phytoplankton, are organisms that produce their own energy through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. Bears are consumers; they obtain energy by eating other organisms, including plants and animals.

Are bats producers?

No they are consumers. Plants are producers.

How does a producers get its matter?

A producer gets it's matter from it's surroundings. E.g a plant will get minerals and water from the ground through it's roots for photosynthesis.

Plants can also produce food by using the sun's light for photolysis of the water molecules. (Basically splitting the H20 into Hydrogen and O2 (oxygen gas)). They release oxygen back into the air and combine the Hydrogen ion with carbon dioxide that they obtained from the air to create sugar (glucose) which is basically chemical food for the plants. This is the summed up process of photosynthesis.

Is the executive producer more important than a producer?

The roles of executive producer and producer are both crucial in film and television production, but they serve different purposes. The executive producer typically oversees the project's overall vision and finances, often securing funding and making high-level decisions. In contrast, the producer manages the day-to-day operations of the production, coordinating between departments and ensuring the project stays on schedule and within budget. While each role is important, the executive producer usually has a broader scope of responsibility.

What are the four main elements that are essential to the growth of producers in ecosystems?

the 4 main element for growth is Oxygen, carbon dioxide, sunlight, & water. Out of which carbon dioxide, sunlight, & water is required. And oxygen is required for respiration.

If you mean chemical elements, they are carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen in that order.
