Relationship is never happy if one person likes another but the other doesn't like them. So while Alyss is in love with Will, and Will is also in love with Alyss, it will be a happy result. Evanlyn and Will has no special relationship other than friendship whatsoever. Also in the story it shows signs of Evalyn and Horace might start dating each other so. Will with Alyss and Horace with Evalyn makes everyone happy.

1. Will, an orphan whos dream was always to become a knight, gets rejected from battle school by sir rodney

2. Will sneaks into Baron Arald's office to read what was on a paper Halt, a ranger, gives him. Halt catches Will and surprisingly decides to make Will his apprentice due to his ability to movie without being seen, a skill needed by rangers.

3. While at an annual ranger's meeting, Halt and Will learn that Morgarath, an enemy of the kingdom where they live, is planning something and that they could soon be at war with him again.

4. They learn that there are Kalkara, terrible beasts on Morgarath's army, are involved.

5. Will and Halt kill the two Kalkara and Will is offered a place at battle school, which he turns down, and is given a bronze oak leaf necklace by Halt, the sign of an apprentice ranger.

you should just read the book, its really good.

We think the theme of the book is remaining loyal and willing to do anything in order to protect your country. For example even though Will knows he might be captured or killed he still decides to destroy the bridge in order to save his country from an invasion that could have put his entire country under slavery or even worse resulted in death for his country's entire population. In the end Will was captured by the Skandians, but he remained loyal to his country.

No, Will proposes to her in the epilogue but she states that he will have to do a lot better than that and walks out on him.

Ruins of Gorlan is the first step in Will's Ranger training, spanning from the time he was chosen by his master Halt to a short span in the future. As Will learns the basics of his new trade, he and Halt eventually go to the annual Ranger gathering where they learn that the Kalkara (beasts created by Morgarath) are on the hunt once again. Halt, Will, and his former apprentice Gilan track the Kalkara across the Solitary Plain, eventually splitting up--Will leaving to ride back to Castle Redmont for help from the Baron and Battlemaster. He returns with the two to find Halt in the Ruins of Gorlan; the two parties fight, the men loosing the battle, but the Kalkara are eventually defeated by Will shooting a flaming arrow at the extremely flammable beasts. The book ends with Halt revealing what he knows about Will's father and mother (his father an ordinary soldier who saved Halt's life and his mother a farm wife who died in childbirth, which brought Halt to take Will to Castle Redmont as the son of a hero), all of which had been a mystery to the orphaned boy.
