You have to beat the main storyline first before you can get a girlfriend or boyfriend. Then you have to do a few things (something like getting something called the friendship compass and getting all 12 marriage candidates to 6 friendship level) to separate Aden and Sonja. Once you do that, you can choose to be Aden or Sonja and befriend whoever you want to marry until you have max friendship with them. If you choose to be Sonja, the boys will propose to you, but if you are Aden you have to complete a request (from Father Gerard, I think) to get a ring to propose. Hope this helps :)
